Down & Out!
Ashton United's cup woes continue. Report by David Robinson.
Ashton continued their poor recent record in the FA Trophy with a comprehensive defeat to high flying Buxton at Silverlands. Within the first couple of minutes right winger Taylor had played in Tuton for the Bucks who beat Jay Gorton and then sidestepped Phillips before being crowded out with penalty shouts being somewhat surprisingly met with the award of a free kick to the visitors. Lee Rick then chested down Kayde Coppin’s cross for Ashton which allowed Martin Pilkington to fire an effort on target, Richard Bennett possibly being impeded as he went for the rebound but the referee again was unmoved.
On 20 minutes a long free kick saw Phillips drop the ball to Hardy who headed home with the referee again stepping in to disallow the goal on advice from the linesman but immediately Ashton lost captain Jay Gorton to a hamstring injury, Connor Roberts-Nurse moving across to centre back. Pilkington then collected Coppin’s header and cut inside before bringing a decent right hand save out of Jameson following which an interchange between Pilkington and Rick sent the latter to the by line from where his cross beat everyone.
Buxton were again carrying the greater threat on the resumption and Tuton quickly beat the offside trap and closed in on Phillips before dragging his effort wide but he was soon back in the action after the ball was won in midfield releasing Hardy for a fine finish. Higgins then saw a clearance charged down giving Hardy another clear run on goal but his chip over Phillips had insufficient strength and Higgins recovered to clear. Yet again the Ashton defence presented Tuton with another one on one which needed a well timed intervention from Phillips to avert the danger.
There was no avoiding the second goal on 75 minutes as Roberts-Nurse gave the ball away leading to Hardy’s effort being saved by Phillips but midfielder Wilson was on hand to follow up, and he almost scored again as his corner went over Phillips and came out off the inside of the post. With Ashton striving to make any headway Rick put a decent strike just wide of the target before Brad Robinson’s cross was sliced over his own crossbar by Palmer and Chris Baguley picked up Ashley Young’s pass and saw his swinging effort come back off the right hand post.
Team: Phillips, Haslam, Roberts-Nurse, Gorton (Aspin), Higgins, Young, Rick, Gee (Baguley), Pilkington, Bennett (Robinson) & Coppin.
