Haslam The Hero
Worldy winner breaks Ammies hearts. Report by David Robinson.
Ashton moved into the 3rd Qualifying round of the FA Cup with a fine win at Salford’s Moor Lane ground highlighted by a superb winning goal from full back Mark Haslam. There were just a couple of minutes to go before the interval when Gary Gee lost the ball in midfield but it was picked up by Haslam who waltzed past 4 or 5 opponents from 30 yards out before finding the bottom corner with a left foot effort.
Ashton were without suspended captain Jay Gorton which saw Haslam drafted into the defence with Greg Pearson moving to centre back. The game got off to a cagey opening and ten minutes were on the clock before a great flick from Matty Chadwick saw Chris Baguley sprint into the area and see his well placed shot touched away by Jay Lynch. From the resulting corner Kayde Coppin and Gary Gee played a 1-2 but Coppin overhit the cross and shortly afterwards Ashley Young suffered a head injury which required bandaging before he could resume.
On the half hour the Ammies came closest to opening their account as a fine through ball by Walters put ex-Robin Sam Madeley in on Phillips but his cross failed to pick out anyone. Steady rain falling during the interval lead to a greasy surface for both teams on the resumption and immediately a long through ball caught Phillips out and bounced straight over him before the covering Haslam was adjudged to have been fouled by Madeley. Midfielder Wiles then tried his luck for Salford cutting in from the right wing but slicing horribly wide but their best chance to date arrived shortly afterwards as a quick break gave Webber a clear run on Phillips but he placed his attempt wide of goal.
Mr Kirk almost intervened as an Ashton pass hit the referee leaving Madeley to race away only to over hit his cross and then centre forward Webber weaved his way into the box and picked out Platt who was denied at the near post. As time ran out a knockdown by Seddon fell to ex-Ashton striker Dale Johnson who was denied by a superb point blank save from Phillips allowing the Robins to take their place in the next round.
