We Go Again

Report by David Robinson

Ashton and Guisborough will replay on Wednesday evening after an entertaining encounter finished goalless at Hurst Cross. A good exchange between Adam Morning and Martin Pilkington led to the former’s cross just being cut out by Carling before the first significant chance fell to the hosts on 16 minutes as Dale Johnson robbed a defender and set up Chris Baguley who was denied by a fine low save from Nick Liversedge who had an impressive afternoon in the visitors’ goal. Baguley then saw an improvised effort from 40 yards tipped over before Town hit back with Jonathan Helm spreading the ball wide to Danny Earl whose cross shot was knocked away by Paul Phillips with Connor Smith’s return effort having no power behind it.
Approaching the break Helm spread the ball across midfield to Curtis Round whose effort drifted wide of goal but with 10 minutes gone after the restart the visitors could have moved ahead as a fine move saw Earl reach the by line and stand up a cross which saw Connor Smith’s header well saved at his near post by Phillips. Smith then immediately got hold of a volley from Peter Bulmer’s cross but saw it fly wide of goal, and the Robins were then back on the attack as a great exchange between Baguley and Martin Pilkington saw the ball fall to the former who was denied by a fine low save from Liversedge.
Gary Gee then won the ball in midfield leading to Baguley’s low shot being saved and a fine touch by sub Matty Chadwick then led to Pilkington hammering an effort wide. With a replay looming Ashton came closest to a breakthrough as Pilkington picked up Johnson’s forward pass with Baguley taking over but clipping the outside of the post from 20 yards. The influential Chadwick then made a run into the area and picked up Johnson’s lay off but could only find the side netting and the Priorymen were still a threat at the other end as Snaith’s square pass picked out Round whose first time effort forced Phillips to tip over for a corner.

Team: Phillips, Coo (Jacobs), Mason, Gorton, Connor, Haining (Chadwick), Baguley, Gee, Pilkington, Johnson, Morning (Sutherland). SNU: Burns, Halford.
