Disappointing Robins Duck Out
Report by David Robinson
Ashton’s FA Cup adventure ended for another season as they suffered a disappointing defeat against lower ranked opponents. The venue for the game was Wellingborough Town’s interestingly named Dog & Duck Stadium and the visitors drafted Alex Frost back into the defence as replacement for injured captain Jay Gorton and just before the half hour the backline had to be further revised as Stephen Mason moved across to centre half as Joe Connor departed with injury.
By this time the hosts were already ahead with the opening goal arriving on 11 minutes as Berwick’s chip into the area found Scott Joseph’s run beating the offside trap to leave him with an easy header to open the scoring. Things could have started so much better for the Robins as a quick break following a corner for the home side in the first minute saw Martin Pilkington and Dale Johnson exchange passes before the former shot straight at Finlay and unfortunately this was about as much as he was to be tested all afternoon. Jeff King then put over a cross from the left wing which led to Johnson’s low effort being blocked before King himself tested the keeper at the near post.
Directly following Connor’s replacement the Ashton defence had barely had time to reorganise before a long throw by Brown forced Mason to head in to his own net and the visitors had been set a mountain to climb with half an hour gone. A long ball then saw Johnson’s flick on volleyed over the top by King and following the resumption Matty Chadwick picked up Gary Gee’s inside pass before slicing well wide. The stroke of luck Ashton were looking for to get a foothold back into the game just eluded them as Pilkington cut inside but saw his shot deflected narrowly wide with Finlay well beaten and Mason then set up Chadwick for a fierce effort which was beaten away as Ashton began to dominate the possession.
For all that the Diamonds could have extended their lead as Lorraine reached the by line and saw his cross force Gary Gee into an attempted clearance which rebounded off Quigley into the grateful arms of Phillips. Ashton’s final efforts saw Chadwick’s cross drift past the far post with Pilkington closing in and Aaron Burns reached the by line but saw his cross evade everyone.
