All Square Try Again

Match report by David Robinson

A replay will be needed to decide who takes their place in the second qualifying round and the prize money of £2,700 after a disappointing encounter finished all square at Hurst Cross with Ashton needing to come from behind twice. A dangerous left wing cross by Adam Morning was just missed by Matty Chadwick who also headed Chris Baguley’s free kick narrowly wide but there were less than 10 minutes on the clock as the visitors moved ahead with former Ashton striker Jordan Bove heading home Liam Gibson’s right wing cross and Sam Grimshaw could have made things worse as he cut inside Cavell Coo before sending a raking effort just wide.

The Robins drew level just past the quarter hour as Adam Morning, having an effective game on the left wing, saw his cross reach the far post where it was half volleyed home by Jay Gorton who had joined the attack. Another cross from Morning was just cleared before Gorton headed Morning’s corner over the top from a promising position. Ramsbottom could have regained the lead as Woods’ cross was side footed over by Grimshaw from just outside the area and Morning’s cross was then just cleared in the nick of time by Edmundson with two Ashton players closing in. Meaney then picked up a loose ball in midfield and sent a 30 yard effort adjacent to the goal and at the other end Matty Chadwick cut inside but could only find Shenton’s side netting.

The Rams regained the lead just before the hour as journeyman winger Shelton Payne showed his class stepping inside Coo before curling home a fine effort. Substitute Martin Pilkington was able to rescue the hosts as he forced home Morning’s right wing free kick through a crowd of players and Liam Goudling was then forced off following a strong challenge with Ashton dominating the possession and the visitors limited to chances on the break. Jay Gorton then made a vital interception from a dangerous cross and it was Pilkington who could have grabbed the winner striking his effort narrowly wide from Gorton’s knock down following Coo’s long pass.

Team; Phillips, Coo, Mason, Gorton, Goulding (Haining), Lees, Chadwick (Sutherland), Gee, Burns (Pilkington), Baguley, Morning. SNU: Connor, Halford.
