If at First you don’t succeed....

Robins through to 1st Round proper. Report by David Robinson

Ashton booked a date with Macclesfield Town after a deserved victory over Gainsborough at the second attempt. After a blank scoreline on Saturday it took only 6 minutes for both sides to register, Trinity moving ahead with 2 minutes on the clock as a rebound from the right side of Ashton’s defence fell kindly for Stephen Brogan to round Phillips and tuck his effort away. Four minutes later Jeff King made a run into the area and saw his cross fall off Adam Morning to leave Martin Pilkington to rifle the ball home from close range.

On a surprisingly good surface given the recent weather Jamie Yates then curled a free kick past the post after Gorton had fouled Simon Russell and the visitors threatened again as a long ball saw both Yates and Brogan beat the offside trap, the former seeing his cross well cut out by Phillips. A 1-2 then put King in at the by line with this cross beating everyone but the Robins moved ahead as a throw in allowed Pilkington to pull the ball back from the by line to the advancing Mason who finished well at the near post.
The second period opened with Pilkington just unable to connect with substitute Joel Melia’s driven cross and Melia himself then picked up a pass and cut inside 2 defenders before seeing his effort deflected through to Jan Budtz. Brogan then made a run to the edge of the area but saw his shot blocked by Joe Connor before Matty Chadwick immediately put over a dangerous cross from the right wing but found no one in a red shirt at home.

Mason then miscontrolled a long ball allowing Yates the opportunity to lob wide following which Chadwick picked up Gary Gee’s pass but sliced a right foot attempt wide of the near post but with just over ten minutes left Jeff King secured Ashton’s place in the first round proper charging down an attempted clearance by Roma before running from halfway and sliding home a cool finish.

Team: Phillips, Coo, Mason, Gorton, Connor, Lees, King, Gee, Pilkington (Johnson), Banim (Melia), Morning (Chadwick). SNU: Sandberg, Vincent.
