Elementary for Marine and Sherlock

Robins crash out of cup after horror show

Ashton crashed out of another cup competition at the first attempt as the visitors ran out convincing winners at Hurst Cross. Marine moved ahead on 13 minutes as Joe Connor fouled Danny Mitchley on the left hand edge of the area and Kurt Sherlock’s free kick was deflected to the back post where William Smart guided his header home. A minute later a low ball into the area found Mitchley on the turn before firing low past Terry Smith and matters could have got even worse for the hosts as James Short’s cross into the area saw Monaghan poking his deflected effort wide as Marine dominated the opening exchanges.

Monaghan then went past Joe Connor and his cross would have reached James Foley but for the intervention of Tunji Moses and the Robins then came the closest as a Matty Chadwick cross found Stephen Mason heading wide from a promising position. Moses then gave the ball away to Monaghan who put a weak effort straight at Smith before Mitchley sent a 20 yard free kick just wide of the left hand post.

Mitchley beat the offside trap at the start of the second half but shot straight at Smith but things soon got even worse for Ashton as joint manager Jody Banim was sent off for a second yellow card. Connor then headed Bobby Lofthouse’s deep corner over the top and Cavell Coo’s cross was steered wide by Mason but with 12 minutes left James Foley’s return ball into the area saw Mitchley’s shot on the turn come back off Smith for Sherlock to head home and at the other end Maiese forced a near post save from Hare and Alex Frost headed a corner straight into the keeper’s arms.

The final action saw a cross into the area find Foley in space and Sherlock completed the scoring from the penalty spot after Mark Lees had been penalised for handball in denying Michael Monaghan. The same teams resume rivalry in the league on Tuesday and it will take a much improved effort from Ashton to achieve a different result.

Team: T.Smith, Mason, Maiese, Connor, Frost, Moses (Coo), Less, Steenson (Lofthouse), Gaskell, Chadwick (Banim), Murray. SNU: Haining.
