Cup Confidence Boost
Robins lifted by Integro cup win. Report by David Robinson
Ashton finally won a cup tie this season as they got the better of their local rivals with a goal in each half. Lee Gaskell had the first chance for the hosts as he exchanged passes with fellow striker Lee Knight before side footing straight at Wills in Town’s goal and shortly afterwards Knight’s cross to the near post was helped over the top by Jack Dorney. Just past the quarter hour a great pass down the middle by Chris Baguley saw joint manager Jody Banim beating off 2 defenders before firing home.
A loose pass from Baguley then almost put the Robins in trouble with Bobby Lofthouse to the rescue and the full back was again on hand to cut out Lambert’s cross. The half ended with Banim bringing a save out of Wills with a left foot effort and Gaskell sending a curling effort over the top.
Knight then played a 1-2 with Banim before seeing his cross cut out and Lewis Codling then made a fine run through the middle before setting up Speed who ballooned over. Gaskell then also shot over before Dorney put his attempt straight at Wills but Knight had more success as he beat the full back inside the area and saw his cross converted for his first Robins goal at the second attempt by sub Rio Murray.
A forward pass then found Speed pulling his effort just wide for the visitors and a decent ball from Steven Gillespie found Humphries slicing past the near post before a great cross field pass from Mark Lees picked out Banim who was denied by Wills who also saved Dorney’s effort from Knight’s cross.
