Vics Get The Bird
Single goal enough for Robins to progress. Report by David Robinson
A single strike in the second half from sub Ryan Crowther was enough to see Ashton progress to the third round of the Integro Sport Cup as they overcame a spirited Vics outfit. Ashton handed a debut to Nico Collins who had been suspended since his move from Abbey Hey but is was the visitors who could have registered in the first minute as a left wing cross saw Alex Johnson get underneath his header with Yaw Gyimah’s subsequent effort being blocked by Jonathan McIlwaine.
A great run then took Lee Knight into the area where his cross saw Collins’ goal bound effort blocked from close range and Collins saw another effort on the turn also blocked from Johnny Gorman’s low cross. The unmarked Gyimah should have done better than to head Pritchard’s left wing cross wide and the Robins could have moved ahead as another Knight cross was helped on by Richard Smith to Gorman who hammered it against the left hand post.
After the break Ashton continued on the attack and Cavell Coo’s delivery from the right wing saw Smith half volley over the top before another effort from the full back was glanced wide by the head of Collins. In between times Gyimah’s glanced header put Pritchard in to pull a shot well wide of the target but a double substitution then broke the deadlock as within a couple of minutes of entering the fray Matty Chadwick set up Crowther for a fine right foot finish. A pull back by Chadwick then saw Benito Lowe’s shot saved on the line before Knight fired the rebound wide and Knight’s pass then found Chadwick dragging wide of goal as Ashton progressed to a home tie against either Farsley or Goole.
