Ashton cruise into the next round.
Report By Robbie Coppack
The Robins eased past Frickley Athletic to book their place into the next round of the FA Trophy courtesy of goals from Matthew Chadwick, Liam Tomsett, Alex Johnson and Jack Dyche. Gavin Allott did level the scores midway through the second half. However, Ashton went up through the gears to secure their place in the next round.
With high winds and rain swirling around Hurst Cross, neither side controlled the game with both teams guilty of giving away possession cheaply in the early exchanges. The game was very scrappy and ultimately lead to Nicky Platt being forced off early on to add to Jody Banim’s injury woes. However, Ashton took the lead just before the half hour mark, Dyche’s long diagonal ball from the right found Chadwick and the striker hit the ball first time on the edge of the box to find the bottom left corner.
From then on, Ashton dominated and were guilty of missing chances to extend their lead before half time as Frickley goalkeeper, Sebastian Malkowski was in fine form.
Ashton started the second half as they ended the first and continued to create openings, Matty Chadwick was played through on goal but his effort just went wide of the far post and Jack Dyche was also denied on more than one occasion.
However on 68 minutes, Frickley managed to pull level with their first meaningful attack of the game, Gavin Allott pounced on a loose ball from six yards out after Ashton failed to clear the initial ball into the box and sent the away dugout into raptures as he found the top corner.
With 15 minutes to go, the game was becoming more stretched with both sides looking to prevent a replay and win the game. And Ashton took advantage of the space left in-behind and were soon back in front. Liam Tomsett regained possession in the middle of the park, he played the ball into Johnson whose initial effort was blocked and fell kindly for Tomsett once more who calmly put the ball in the net to put Ashton 2-1 up.
Ashton really started to stamp their authority on the Evo-Stik South side and five minutes later, substitute Alex Johnson made it 3-1. His initial effort was saved but the striker managed to prod home the rebound and send Ashton into the next round.
Jack Dyche then put the game beyond any doubt, Alex Johnson was released down the right and his pinpoint cross found the head of Dyche and he guided the ball past the keeper to make it 4-1 and to make it a great afternoon for the Robins.
