Killer On Goals

3 years ago By Steve Hobson

Martin Pilkington talks to James Burch.

“A few hat-tricks would probably help me become top scorer but I'm just aiming to score as many as I can for the team!” Martin Pilkington, Striker.

Last season’s Ashton United top scorer, has aspirations to not only pick up the teams golden boot award again but also the Evo-Stik leagues coveted prize!

After picking up his tenth goal of the season, during the win at home to Workington. Martin Pilkington is aiming to break the twenty goal mark for his team and in return help the Robins reach the top of the league;

“It's always good to reach double figures but I always expect myself to be better. If I was on twenty goals now, I’d think I should be on thirty. I always try to improve and always aim high.”

‘Killers’ forward partner Dale Johnson has also scored eight times in eleven appearances for the team. With the two joining together to strike up a formidable pairing, Pilkington has thanked the former Salford player for contributing to the rise in his form;

"I’m confident that I can still reach my aim of twenty plus goals this campaign, Dale has helped me massively with this. We have an understanding like I said last time and that will only get better. We're both greedy at times but all forwards are. We've assisted each other this season and if we see that the other person is in a better position we will give it them.”

Pilkington added; “There's no competition between Dale and I. I’m just as happy setting him up as I am scoring myself. No disrespect to my former partner Richard Bennett but he wanted the ball in behind. In ways he was too similar to me. Other people saw him as a target man but he'd be the first to tell you he wasn't that player. Dale is ‘that player’ so opposition defenders have two things to worry about and that's either going long to me or being dropped in to Dale.”

18 goals is the tally to aim for at the moment. Buxton’s Liam Hardy is the leagues current top scorer on this count. Despite it being achievable, Pilkington is more interested in the bigger picture and hopes his goals can fire the team towards a memorable season;

“A few hat-tricks would probably help me become top scorer but I'm just aiming to score as many as I can for the team. I hope that's enough to either secure top spot or finish in the play-off places.”
