Kersal were a few players short so lending of players ensued and the game was competed with 15 v 14 and uncontested scrums. Ashton scored 5 tries in the first half including scores from Lee Nunns, Adam Whitworth, Liam Crank and fly half Max Weatherhead. Just before half-time Kersal pulled a try back with Iain Greenfield (playing for the opposition in the first half) involved in the try. Half-time 29-7.
Ashton kept moving the ball around impressively in the second half with some good rugby and tries were scored from good positions across the pitch. Debutant Rob “Posh Rob” Cooksey scored following a darting run down the right wing and further tries followed from Lee Nunns, Luke Berry (2) and Iain Greenfield (now playing for Ashton!). Kersal, to their credit, kept competing and were rewarded with a second try before Rob Cooksey and Max Weatherhead replied with further tries. Finally Rob Cooksey made it a debut to remember with the final try of the day to complete his hat-trick. Final score 84-14.
Man of the match was Max Weatherhead. Next week Ashton travel to Rochdale 4s, 15th Sept, 3pm.
