Lights, full size pitch, action...
In their first clash of the year, the Under 13's took on local rivals Altrincham Kersal and came up just short. However, signs are good for the season to come...
Altrincham Kersal 5 (2) v (2) 2 AOM
The new season has arrived and has brought with it a raft of new rules. The Boys will need to adapt quickly to much larger pitches, 13 a side and contested scrums. Ashton visited Kersal on Wednesday night and whilst the hosts got bragging rights, both teams will have taken a lot of positives from their performances.
Ashton opened the scoring in the opening exchanges when Seb caught the Kersal defence cold, running powerfully to score in the corner. Kersal equalised not long after and the game then ebbed and flowed with neither team dominating. Just before half time, Kersal took the lead after a kick to the corner bounced perfectly for the Kersal winger to collect and run in.
Ashton then scored early in the second period as the darkness set in and the floodlights came on. Josh fended off a few challenges before running to the line. The game was in the balance at that point with both teams trying hard and tackling well. However, in the later stages Kersal's bigger squad and Ashton's tiredness allowed the hosts to gain some momentum. Some excellent defensive work held up a maul, which looked like it would result in a certain Kersal try, but the hosts pressure finally told and some sweeping moves broke the Ashton resistance.
This was an excellent early season match played in a largely good spirit and credit to Kersal for the win. However, Ashton get a chance to exact revenge in a return fixture this coming Wednesday.
