It's all a learning curve...
Ashton's under 13's battled hard but came up short in this evening kick off at home to Kersal.
AOM 2 (1) -v- (3) 7 Altrincham Kersal
There was no lack of effort on show in this return pre-season fixture against local rivals Kersal. However, the visitors ran out deserved winners on the night.
The Ashton defence were put under a lot of pressure in the first half but managed to keep the scoreline down through sheer grit and determination. When the Boys did have the ball, the attacking line was often too flat meaning that territory was hard to come by. Nevertheless, a clever kick from Josh put Kersal's full back under pressure and in the next phase of play, Niall took advantage of panic in the Kersal ranks to power over. Kersal led 3-1 at half time.
The third quarter was by far Ashton's best phase of the game. The Boys went up the gears, and started to create good attacking opportunities. One such move, saw Etienne race through, body swerve and touch down to reduce the deficit to just one try. The momentum was firmly with Ashton and it was clear the next try would be decisive. Unfortunately for Ashton, despite their third period dominance, Kersal scored twice in the final minutes of the quarter. As the light faded, Kersal extended their lead through some strong running to put a gloss on the scoreline.
Ashton's forwards have been working on their scrummaging and this was a big positive on the night and bodes well for the rest of the season. Special mention as well to Joe who put in some eye catching runs. The Lads will have learnt a lot from this double header and I am sure there will be brighter days ahead.
