Great win for the Banky Boys in Chester Cup Clash
Ashton put in a spirited performance to secure their first away win of the season and stay in the top cup competition
Chester B 3 (1) -v- (3) 4 AOM
The under 13's travelled down the M56 to a frosty Chester for their rearranged cup match last Sunday. After a pitch inspection, the referee decided to delay the kick off to allow the pitch time to thaw out. However, when the match started it was Ashton who caught their opponents cold.
Ashton decided to attack downhill in the first half and this proved to be a great decision as a combination of tough tackling and great work at the breakdown, pinned Chester deep in their own half. This gave Ashton's backs the platform to attack and Niall soon found a gap to power over. After an inspired break from Matthew, Ollie followed up to dive in for a deserved second try. Chester then scored out of nowhere exposing some poor tackling down the Ashton left. However, Josh collected a high clearance before charging past the hosts defensive line to restore Ashton's two try advantage.
In the second half, Etienne scored after good work from Ashton's forwards to make the score look comfortable. However, this seemed to wake Chester up and they were the better team from that point on. The hosts put the Boys' under immense pressure, but with grit and determination and just a little bit of luck, Ashton hung on to win by one.
The smiles on the Boys' faces at the final whistle were priceless.
All credit to Chester who showed real character in the second half but Ashton probably just edged the game overall. The Boys reward for winning against Chester B is errr....a match at the same venue in the next round against Chester A!
Special mention to Niall who had a great game and Ollie whose decision making was spot on making him man of the match.
