Ash Utd 0-4 Chichester City
FA Vase 1st Round Proper
Despite the result against Old Wokingians in the previous match, the lads were in buoyant mood and really looking forward to playing Chichester City, as they play in the league above, so this was always going to be a real test. Our game plan was to frustrate them and use our pace on the counter attack. This went out of the window within the first 10 minutes as we gifted them 2 simple goals both from corners. The lads decided to change how we set up and this cost us dearly 0 – 2. These are the vital lessons that we need to learn at this level.
Chichester City were having loads of the ball and making the pitch as wide as they could and, having realised our plan, got their full backs to push high and mark our wingers tight. They had a really good interchange in midfield which sent their forward through one on one and he rounded the keeper to make it 0 – 3. Then came the talking point with Al Reid being sent off after a coming together with their centre forward. 0 – 3 down and down to 10 men at halftime.
The game plan in the second half remained the same and the lads gave it everything they had. Chichester City remained in complete control of the game but couldn’t find a fourth goal. I changed the tactics and decided to go and chase the game in a valiant attempt to get something out of it. This didn’t quite materialise and Chichester City caught us on the counter attack to make it 0 – 4.
Overall a disappointing result but a great second half performance, bringing to an end our good run in the FA Vase. But this will spur us on for next season. Our attention now turns to moving up the league and challenging for promotion. We entertain Staines Lammas at home on Saturday.
