Much changed side shows squad strength

Askeans went into their first of a long run of home games with yet another changed side as injuries and holidays (more on that in a bit) took a massive toll on team selection!

Askeans started the game brilliantly, for once, as the simple game plan that was preached by AJ , CJ & Gower pre game was put into effect perfectly. The forwards secured the ball , a crash ball by Connor Faulkes (who is showing what a quality player he is more and more with each game he plays) was followed up by another crash from skipper AJ who burst through the 12 & 8 and rounded the 15 to score an excellent team try. A's maintained this intensity for a further 15 minutes and should have had another try but for Dom Bolas in the dead ball area deciding to dive under the ball instead of on it!! Then it all went horribly wrong, the Askean side that was already stretched to the limit suffered 3 injuries which used up all subs in a space of 5 minutes. Chayesy on the wing and Andy Bladon at scrum half both suffered shoulder and knee injuries in the same spell of play which enforced two substitutions. Then unbelievably within two minutes of Michael Bolton coming on he was limping back off with a suspected torn calf (AJ - I told you can alwasys rely on MB!) Which meant we had used up all our substitutions within 30 minutes!! This led to Askeans losing their head for 20 minutes in which Faversham scored all of their points. Askeans who were struggling majorly to readjust to all the enforced changes and were hit well by a faversham side who utilised the opportunity well. 2 penalty kicks were nailed and a try were scored. A disjointed side can do without the opposition calling reduced numbers in the lineout at the last minute and then throwing it in quick whilst the spare players were heading back.

As with the Dartford game last week it took a half time break for Askeans to regroup and get their heads back together. The simple game plan was again preached by skipper AJ and coach Len along with the need for ruck defence to be in place to repel the diaphanous Faversham game plan. All this was put into place perfectly in the second half. The first 5 minutes involved Faversham, who had their tails up, on the front foot and threatening to score deep in the A's 22. However stout defence allied with poor decision making led to Askeans tryline remaining unbreached which appeared to nullify any hopes of another faversham score. The majority of the game was then followed by Askeans on the front foot. AJ who was playing 9 following Andy's injury swapped positions with CJ at 10 which led to a much more controlled workmanlike performance. A try was scored by AJ who shaped to hit Connor but went himself and alluded the last tackler. A penalty awarded in front of the posts was struck by AJ to finally give Askeans the lead they had deservedly built in the first 15 minutes. A couple of more opportunities for tries followed but were repelled by solid faversham defence. Joe McQuillan attempet a dive over a ruck on the try line but was stripped by the 9. Dom Bolas was then guilty of being a greedy fucker. With the last man drawn in Dom decided too attempt to run through the winger instead of popping to Dan O'*Rourke to stroll in (in hindsight a wise move otherwise we'd never have heard the end of it!!). With 90 seconds to go a penalty was awarded on the touchline of the 22. Skipper AJ elected for the posts much to the fear of your authour who wanted a kick to touch to eat up the time. Fortune favours the brave however as skipper AJ smashed the penalty through the posts to show the so called Askean kickers how its done!

Another fine win by Askeans who were again severely short of players. There isn't many
sides in this league who could still win with so many regulars missing. Pat Johns, Grant Charlesworth, Ben Hughes, Matt Stokes & Sam Adams had all elected to ski as apparently it's quite difficult to read a fixture list in August before booking a holiday!! Dave O'Connor and Niall Highgate were lost to international rugby. Obviously they were watching and not playing. One was in Paris the other Cardiff. Chaps if you want to spend the afternoon with ignorant and backward people then I give you Well Hall!!

Great 16-11 win which will give the so called first team players something to ponder. Next week the Princes playSouthwark at Well Hall whilst the ones take a much deserved week off. Well played all involved and thank you as ever to Len, Ian Lunn, Kevin Broughton & Dennis Blackman for your categorical support.
