Askean's Face Tough Foots Cray Away

A BIG test for Askean's first game of the season.

As if the first game of the season wasn't hard enough against the new team relegated from the league above, half of the Askeans team, Including newly elected captain Patrick Johns, decided that it was a fitting day for a wedding. Nevertheless, with a growing askeans club, a very strong side was fielded for the season opener.

Lead by new vice captain Connor faults the askeans heading down to Foots cray to try and start the season off in the right way, a big WIN.
The previous week saw a very disorganised Askeans team fall short to an average at best, Old Georgians, in the cup. From the turn up at Foots Cray, it was clear that the A's wasn't going to make the same mistake and took the pre match warm up very seriously.

The kick off.
The opening sparring from both teams showed lookers that askeans was out to do damage and maybe shocked some of the Cray players. Building a good base off the scrum and line out the forwards gave the back the supply they needed to keep the opposition defence on their feet.

First Blood. From a great rolling maul set up from Piers Johnson, Askeans marched the Foots cray pack towards their 22. James Hanney then delivered the ball to AJ and the rest of the backs. A great link up and move forced fail play from cray and it was then gently caressed over the uprights by AJ.
Askeans take the points 3-0.

The rest of the half showed the askeans keeping the ball, but great defence from Foots Cray kept they at bay.

Half Time.

The second hard continued from where it left off, Askeans applying pressure and Foots Cray defending well. Tension was building and it would be either a matter of genius or who would break first. Lucky for askeans it was a brilliant play from the back to break the line with captain Connor punching a hole, to offload to Josh Parry at fullback to see Joe Blackman finally put the ball down, Try time.
Unfortunately James Hanney now had a mission for trying to convert from the touch line. A great effort however not quite good enough on the day.

Foot Cray Find Their Feet.
Momentum building in the Cray camp now started to test the askeans defence. The game was now being played in the askeans 22 and strong runners from the Cray gave visiting side trouble. With about 15 minutes left on the clock the Foots Cray pack marched over the Askeans try line for their first score of the game. With a missed conversion, the game was now being won only by a point and the Askean team could feel the pressure.
The last 10 minutes showed great nerve from both teams and still some great rugby was being played, despite the close scoreline.
Askeans saw the game out to the final whistle to win 8 - 7.

A great win to start the season and a solid performance all round, each player 1-18 for the askeans should be proud.
Special mentions to;
Joe Blackman and Dave O'Connor - Men of the Match and very well deserving great play for 80 minutes.
Charlie Grist and John Install - Putting bodies on the line and breaking them. A broken collar bone for charlie and broken tibia for John, get well soon.
And lastly to all the regular supporters, Camera man and woman (claire and Kevin), Mr H20, coach Len and Lunny and all the other players that came down to watch. It really does help, thank you.

Next week see Askeans take on old rivals Brockleians. Please check fixtures for kick off time and squad.
