AOFC 5 vs 1 AFC Bridgford
Cranmers advance to next round of Notts Intermediate Cup
Aslockton & Orston welcome Notts Senior League Division 1 opponents AFC Bridgford in the first round of the Notts Intermediate Cup. The Cranmers welcomed back Tommy Nesteruk after his holiday and Nick Fry after several weeks out due to a broken jaw. Matt James was fit enough to start after his injury and Joe Fryer returned in goal. Nathan Woolley returned to the bench after working away last week. The home side set out with a 4-5-1 formation with Fryer in goal, Nico Devivo, James Hackett, Ryan Campbell and Oliver Warner at the back. The centre midfield trio were Pierce Hallam, Tommy Nesteruk, Nick Fry whilst Matt James and George McCartney were out wide, with James Hallam the lone striker.
Aslockton came out of the blocks quickly and immediately began to control the game and put pressure on the Bridgford back line. Hallam's pace up front caused issues whilst Nick Fry got up the pitch to support him well in the early stages. Only 5 minutes in a Nico Devivo throw in was flicked on by James Hallam, Nick Fry took a great first touch and smashed the ball home from 15 yards, leaving the keeper no chance. Minutes later Aslockton & Orston doubled their lead as Oliver Warner raced down the left wing and delivered a teasing cross in to the area, which James Hallam headed passed the oncoming keeper. On 17 minutes the home side extended their lead again as Nick Fry grabbed his second of the game heading home a Tommy Nesteruk cross. The Cranmers could have had more as James Hallam was laid off perfectly by Nesteruk but he skied his shot from close range and Nick Fry was saved well one-on-one to prevent him from getting his hat-trick. The score remained 3 - 0 as the sides went in for half-time.
AFC Bridgford came out much better in the second half, doing their best to get back in to the game. 10 minutes in to the half it seemed as though AOFC might be made to rue missed chances as a quick free kick caught out the Cranmers' back line and the Bridgford forward slotted past Joe Fryer to bring the score back to 3 - 1. However Aslockton stepped it up again and created more chances and took control of the game once again. George McCartney was having an excellent game out on the left, causing problems with his pace and movement. He could have grabbed a couple of goals, but we firstly well denied by the Bridgford keeper, and secondly hit a shot over after some great footwork saw him beat 3 defenders to create a chance. The home side scored their 4th of the game after George McCartney won a free-kick on the edge of the box. He smashed the ball towards goal which the keeper saved well, but he could only parry in to the path of Nesteruk who tapped the ball in to the bottom corner. A well deserved goal for Tommy who had an outstanding game. Aslockton grabbed their 5th of the match when Tommy Nesteruk barrelled his way through the opposition defence and hammered a cross along the six yard box which Matt James did tremendously well to guide to ball in to the back of the net. Subs were made for the home side then, as Nathan Woolley replaced Nick Fry, Lewis Bonham replaced George McCartney and Sam Smith replaced Ryan Campbell. Aslockton saw the game out well, in full control.
5 - 1 the final score and Aslockton & Orston will travel to Sherwood Colliery Reserves in the next round on Saturday 4th November.
Goals from: Nick Fry (2), James Hallam, Tommy Nesteruk and Matt James.
MOTM: Tommy Nesteruk and Oliver Warner (both outstanding).
