IDEAL ROLE EMERGING FOR EX PLAYERS TO GET BACK INVOLVED IN THE GAME

As the rugby landscape changes in Cumbria and indeed wider, the officiating of the game is not only done by Society Referees but also those who are classed as ‘Club Referees’. This is a scheme we started a few seasons ago and is working well, with identified ‘Club Referee’ games on the whole going ahead.

This is an ideal volunteering opportunity for ex-players who want to get back involved with Aspatria. A club referee only officiates at occasional home games, as and when required. A working understanding of the game is a plus but no one, supporters or players, are expecting Wayne Barnes to turn up. They will just be grateful that a game is going ahead.

Aspatria and Cumbria RU want to help to improve the knowledge and confidence of club ref volunteers on the pitch and ensure you are supported appropriately. As such we are providing some informal training to allow you to do this. Attendance is recommended but is entirely voluntary.

The next training opportunities we have for; Society Referees, Club Referees, Young Whistlers & Potential Officials are;

· 26th July – New Laws & Interpretations @ Carlisle RFC – 7pm Start – This session will be led by Ben Blain and will be available for Coaches as well as anyone involve in officiating or wanting to get involved in this area. Please just come along to the event on the evening.
· 13th Sept – Training Event for Club Referees, Young Whistlers & Potential Club Referees Only – Penrith RUFC (TBC) – 6pm for 6:30pm start – This session will hopefully be led by the Society Training Officer – Ben Blain. If you would like to suggest appropriate topics, we would be happy to put something together to support your on-going development as officials. This will be light touch and very club referee centric in terms of delivery.

As part of our Club Referee & Young Whistlers Programmes we also have relevant shirts to thank you for your ongoing support for the game, please get in touch to claim one of these. In addition to this we have funding to allow you to achieve any referee qualifications you may wish to pursue. The next ‘England Rugby Referee Awards’ are scheduled for;

Venue to be confirmed 20/05/2018 and 03/06/2018
Aspatria RUFC 21/01/2018 and 28/01/2018
Creighton RUFC 05/11/2017 and 12/11/2017

The Cumbria Referees Society are extremely supportive of this programme and are happy to help in any way, although as a development team we own this project there are bursaries/kit for individuals joining the Society as well as mentoring support available.
If you would like to get involved, discuss/suggest topics for the session on the 13th Sept or want to claim a shirt for you or a member of your club, please get in touch and we can arrange this.

Take the first step and contact Mel Hanley on 07739199531 or call in any training night [Tuesday or Thursday] and speak to a coach.
