Aspatria pulled off a remarkable Cumberland Cup victory with a 17-12 win over First Division heavyweights Seaton Rangers.

Most neutrals had predicted a win for the Seaton outfit but a large crowd had descended on St Mungo's Park to witness some summer rugby.

It was a bright start for both teams with Seaton looking strong in the middle of the park but Aspatria's defence was up to the task. Such was the even nature of the game that it was still 0-0 after a quarter of an hour. It took a moment of magic from centre Darryl Creighton who went on a mazy run, beating seven defenders to score the Hornets try of the season so far. Luke Johnson added the conversion. 6-0 to the home team.

The Hornets doubled their lead soon after when stand-off Billy Dalton pounced on a mistake to sprint 90 metres to score under the black dot. Again, Johnson added the conversion.

Seaton got back in the game when they scored via big winger Matthew Dixon who got over in the corner. The conversion was missed. Seaton then scored again with Dixon adding his second to set Hornets hearts racing. The conversion was missed, 12-8 at half-time. The Hornets and the partisan home crowd were starting to believe that Aspatria could pull off an upset.

The second half saw defences on top with the score remaining the same for the first quarter. Seaton broke the deadlock with a try from Alex McDonald who burrowed over from close range. 12-12 after the conversion was missed.

Seaton could sense blood but Aspatria nosed ahead with a cheeky drop goal from impressive 17 year old stand-off Luke Johnson. Seaton then tried a short kick-off but Richard Holliday caught the kick off and went over from 50 metres. The conversion was missed but the Hornets held on for a 17-12 victory.

Man of the Match was Hornets forward, Mark Deans who was a menace all afternoon with his punishing runs and brutal defence. He also astonished the 200 strong crowde with his best Mel Gibson/Lethal Weapon impression- putting his own dislocated shoulder back into place.
