aspull vets gain victory in their 1st game of the season

On a hot sunny day where the temperatures reached over 30* C ( well they did in Tenerife) aspull vets played their 1st game of the season. With several players unavailable due to international duty and a couple of twisted socks and a serious finger nail injury they welcomed a few new faces to the ranks and some players where slightly under 35.
As chorley warmed up aspull watched in admiration and it brought back memories of when the vets could warm up an play on the same day . the referee called a meeting to discuss the issues of the day Meadows decided he knew everything and went for a drink of water the ref was duly unimpressed and when Damien decided he didn’t need to listen either it only strengthened our relationship with the ref !
Playing up hill against the wind with what little sun there was reflecting off Hursty’s ball patch things looked tough.
Aspull started slowly and then it slowed down . Damien was in top form only dropping 3 passes and the ones he did catch were followed by a shocking pass bombing 3 tries in the 1st 15mins. Aspull did take the lead when good work by the backs Damien wasn’t involved saw the ball go wide where fast Hands Keegs ( what he was doing there we don’t know ) slipped the ball out to new Winger Shotty’s mate Lee 0-5 the kick was missed by Chaddy . as vets rugby is all about having fun (and of course winning) a serious breach of the vets code was witnessed when Hughie was seen Not to be enjoying himself trying to tell the ref where he was going wrong now Hughie you should know that’s Mick and Keegs job !!!
Danny Arnold thought he would take the pressure off his mate Damien by knocking on himself but us vets never forget !
Chorley reduced the lead with a penalty 3-5
A further try by shotty’s mate Lee increased the lead 3-10 the kicked was missed by chaddy ( a theme emerging here)
The forwards were getting on top and Darren was giving them lots of support from His position just outside Meadows at centre. From good ball by the forwards Meadows made a searing break until he hit the Patch of Treacle on the wing and slowed down to walk ! then proceeded to throw a miss pass out and it was that good a miss pass it missed everybody !!
Damien redeemed himself well slightly when he scored an excellent try and guess what the kicked was missed but this time it was Danny (I bet I can hit the corner flag)Arnold. The crowd where getting inpatient and cries of ‘Get Baz ‘on rang around the ground. 3-15
Aspull began to show some sparkling handling resulting in a try for Graham Bennett 3 -20 converted by only joking kick was missed again !
The forwards continued to dominate and when Keith (what do I do in a ruck ) Turner got tackled Darren (Boss Hog) was 1st on the scene and did a fantastic job of waving his team mates passed him as he moved out to centre as far away from the ruck as he could get .

With ht closing in aspull scored another try when good hands resulted in Young Chaddy scoring in the corner Darren Stepped up to take the conversion and guess what Yes he missed to

HT 3-25
With the half time drinks and chat over with it was back to business danny ( im not passing to anyone ) Arnold broke through and scored under the post which posed the questions was this to be the 1st conversion of the day ? who would take it ? Chaddy decided as it was under the post it was so simple he would drop kick it and Guess what He MISSED ! even Choley where shouting Get Baz on.
The next score came when the forwards supplied good ball and good hand yes I did say good hands by the backs and Darren resulted in Shotty’s other mate scoring. I hope you are all sitting down because you won’t believe what happened next Aspull actually converted the try and what makes this even more remarkable it was Graham Bennett !!!!!!!! 3-37
Aspull were picking up the pace and and when capt Mick Yates sprinted onto the ball there was never a doubt what the outcome would be Yes you guessed it he pulled his hamstring well mick you have been warned !
With aspull leading 37-3 chorley must have thought things couldn’t get any worse but then aspull unleashed their secret weapon JOEY ! who strolled onto the pitch with the poise and authority of a seasoned professional unfortunately he hadn’t realise he had got his Skull cap on back to front. Some say he should of left it on that way.

Further tries came from Chris (papa smurf ) Hurst Again converted by GB 3-44
Some free flowing rugby was now being played and when young Mike Hampson strode under the post for another 7 pointer or so we thought GB managed to hit the post ! GB said it takes some doing hitting a post from 10metres away especially when there is an 18foot gap between them 3-49
Darren returned to the field after a much needed rest and asked could he play centre mick agreed as he would just go and stand there anyway. A break by Darren rumbling down the hill resulted in a try by Damien converted by GB 3-56. Danny Arnold also returned after a rest and asked could he go in the 2nd Row (what an idiot ) people have tried for years get out of the 2nd row he did say after the game ‘im not Bloody doing that again it hurt my ears’ aw poor Danny
GB then scored the final try of the day an indeed converted to leave the score 3-63
As the vets chorley off GB uttered those immortal words ‘well stuck at ‘
