Remember to come to our first 125th Anniversary lunchtime event at the club on Saturday 18th October.

This is another extract from 125 Years of AOE. This extract is from 1989/90 Centenary season when we played Worcester for league promotion and we beat Birmingham Solihull in the North Mids Cup.

The 1st XV finished 3rd in the intensely competitive North Midlands Div 1, losing out on promotion in the final game of the season to Worcester – who began their climb into the Premiership. Bridgnorth, Evesham, Newport, Kings Norton, Kidderminster, Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch and Luctonians made up the rest of the league opponents. In The North Midlands Cup, Aston progressed to the quarter finals with a 7-4 victory over Birmingham & Solihull, a try and penalty to Gary Street (World Cup winning coach), before bowing out to near neighbours Veseyans.
The 2nd XV, likewise had more wins and scored more points than any other 2nd XV except its immediate predecessors. The 3rd XV, despite an unparalleled run of 5 defeats before Easter, finished by setting a new 3rd XV record of 805 points.
The 4th and 5th XVs between them played a total of 52 games, often against higher sides from clubs without our strength in depth, and won exactly half of them. Colts sides, including for the first time ever an Under 12 XV, played 24 games, winning 13.

The Centenary Celebration matches, staged against favourite opposition teams, and usually played on a Sunday afternoon to allow the rest of the Club to enjoy them also, saw the 2nds beat Old Yardleians, the 3rds defeat Old Coventrians (including Kim Furlong who guested for them), the 4ths beat Nuneaton OE and the 5ths drew with Old Saltleians. Our Under 25s produced a stunning display to beat Greater Birmingham Under 21s 32-0 and the 1st XV defeated COBS (including Tony Stafford) 28-14. The Exiles match saw a mixture of old faces and recent school leavers combine to face an Aston ‘Select’ XV. The Exiles included Richard Allsop, David Williams, Lewis Caldicott, Ray Partridge, Darren Parker, Roger Norton, Mike Watts, Neil Wayne, Rod Smith, Paul Westwood, Roger Jenkins, Ken Johnston, Derek Weaver, and Pete Harvey under the captaincy of Richard Collis – whilst the Select XV was skippered by Jonathan Collis and older brother Mike refereed.
The Under 19s, managed by Darren Glenn, included many future 1st XV players and the Under 15’s – looked after by Terry Green – was skippered by future Club Captain and Coach Allan Mitchell, and also included Terry Finn and Harry Vlahakis, both of whom joined their captain at Moseley before returning to become prominent members of later Aston Old Edwardians sides.
The Easter Tour to Portugal saw Aston enter two sides in the Loule International Tournament, and matches were played against Gibraltar, St Foy – a French 2nd Division side who remained undefeated during the tournament, Belenenses, that season’s Portuguese Division 1 Champions, Abercymbi, a Welsh touring side, and the hosts, Loule. AOE ‘A’ XV took the runners-up prize and the ‘B’ side was awarded the prize for the most sporting team.
During the season, Vice captain Martin Smith alone played in all of the 1st XV matches, as well as continuing to represent North Midlands, having the previous season surpassed Russell Bakers 50 year old record of 20 County Caps. David Curwen also passed the 20 cap mark in Centenary season and there were new Caps in Mick Florey and Rob Cairns.
Glyn Brazell & Kevin Thomas shared the Turley Trophy for Top Try Scorer, with 27 apiece. In all, 94 players shared 507 tries. Tim Watson, who had led the 2nd XV to record breaking seasons decided to stand down from the captaincy at the end of the season, and was awarded the Clubman of the Year tankard.
