Aston narrowly miss out in pre season friendly

Aston went over to Birmingham Exiles on Saturday to try and put into practice all the hard work that has been shown during pre season training.

The squad was made up of senior players and colts, many of whom were making their senior debuts.

The game was to be split into two 20 minute spells and a 40 minute half.

In the first 20 minutes Aston were playing all the rugby and were showing great promise but unfortunately down to two small mistakes they found themselves 14-3 down.

What followed can only be described as 30 minutes of nail biting rugby as the two teams traded scores.

Tries for Darren Gardner, Freddie Brittain, Ethan Channer and our new Australian signing Nick Whiteman meant that with 10 minutes to go Aston were needing a converted try to take victory.

After a very nasty looking collapsed scrum Exiles asked to go uncontested to which the referee agreed. This took away one of Aston's major advantages as their set pieces had worked well all day.

The game started to get scrappy but Aston definitely had the upper hand which caused some Exiles players to loose their cool in what had been a good tempered game to that point. To stop anything occurring the referee blew the whistle early leaving Aston disappointed in not being able to get that telling score.

When asked for his thoughts after the game Club Captain, Tom Nener said:

“Saturday was a really positive performance from the new squad that we have put together at Aston over the summer. We had opportunities to win the match which should have been taken. Going forward, we need to work on organisation in attack and defence to ensure that chances are taken and that “soft” tries are not conceded. That said, the team demonstrated that there is some very exciting young talent at the club and the squad will only get stronger as the season progresses.”

The next fixtures for Aston are on the 30th Augustt with the 1sts away at Woodrush and the 2nds in the Birmingham Barbarians tournament.
