It was great to see former 1st XV Captain Sam Grundy playing for the 4th XV last Saturday.

In doing so, Sam achieved his ambition of playing for Aston in 5 different decades - the 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and now the 10's. Steve Dyer, Ian Davis, Mankit Yau & Neil Glasby have also achieved this feat.

Sam came to Aston relatively late in his career but quickly became a mainstay of the club. He first captained the 2nd XV in 1977-78, a role he fulfilled for 6 seasons, and then became the first non Old Boy to be appointed 1st XV Captain - in 1983-84.

After a couple of years out of the hot seat, Sam became 3rd XV Captain in 1987-88, and remained in a captaincy role for many years to follow. He is believed to to the only person to have captained all 4 sides.

Sam also held the position of Chairman for a number of years, and was deservedly made a Life Vice president of eth Club a few years ago.

We look forward to his appearance in the 4th XV in 2020.
