Oldest Half Back Pairing

Oldest Half Back Pairing image

After the discussion around the youngest half back pairing to turn out for the 1st XV, thoughts on Saturday turned to the oldest

We are pretty sure that it is not Jacko Page (pictured in action for England v Scotland 1971) and Martin Smith, as whilst Jacko was in his 40s when he last turned out for the 1st XV, Sniffer was some years younger than him - although we are happy to be proved wrong.

Suggestions welcome from all (apart from those who were invovled in the debate on Saturday)

Bloody difficult one this. It must date back to the 70s or 60s.

I can't find a record of Micky Watts and Sniffer palying in the same 1st XV side, so if they did it would have been before 2002 - which would discount them as the oldest half back pairing.

Our records for the 1st XV are incomplete, so Jacko's appearances are not fully documented - but given that he last played just after Centenery season (aged about 42), and Steve Jarvis would have been about 30 - I think we have an older pairing.

Micky Watts and Allan Mitchell played at half back together on April 9th 2011 against Stourbridge Lions (Mick at 9, and Mitch at 10)

Mitch was then 36 whilst Mick was 43 - giving a combined age of 79, substantially more than Page/Jarvis, or any other combination we can come up with.

Also had Barry Mak at 10 and Micky Watts at 9 for some of the 1st XV game against Mosely Oak earlier this season, and i'm pretty sure Baz is older than Mitch??

Matt, Barry Mak's going to be well pleased with you as he was 2 years below Mitch at school...!! Barry, was only 35 last October, and was in the same year at Aston as, among others, Woody, John Fallon and Gary Jones!! Mitch was 37 last October and was in the same year at Aston as Terry Finn, Harry Vlahakis and Adam Middleton..!!

I too was in that year with Allan, Terry, Harry et al. 50-plus games unbeaten over 3 seasons as I recall...we all had a lot more hair back then though...

Rich, are there any players from that year still playing that you know of..??

Other than those you mention I'm only aware of one still playing regularly - Rob Bevington (a regular member of the side in early years at the school but less so in later years) now lives near Cambridge and plays for his local side there. The other players from that year group that I'm still in touch with to one degree or another (Matt Cockbill, Richard Gibson, Marlon Franklin, Wayne Newsome, Jevan & Sebastian Taylor, Bill Simpson, James Harrison, Paul Foody) have all long since stopped to my knowledge.

Carl Savage at scrum half (circa 1965 - 1985) was as old as a conker tree when he packed up playing. Steve Powell at fly half must have been in his late thirties towards the end of his days - I even recall a certain Derek Coles filling in at fly half on the odd occasion in those halcyon days.
