With the success of Team GB in the Olympics 7s fresh in the mind - a reminder that AOE also had a triumphant side

The North Midlands Seven a Side tournament was a major part of the Rugby season, from its inauguration in 1930 until the 1980s

Aston reached the final 4 times during the 1930's :-

1931 - Burton 3 AOE 3 (Abandoned in extra time owing to the exhaustion of players)
1932 AOE 5 Moseley 0
1934 AOE 5 Moseley 0
1937 AOE 8 Worcester 3

The pictured programme is from the 1966 event, showing an AOE squad of :-

D Coles, D Monk, J Rhodes, V Lilley, R Calver, P PItt,, C Dallimore and D Marlow

with the results showing that AOE bowed out in the first round having lost 9-3 to Newport. Moseley went on to win the tournament, beating Stourbridge 18-o in the final.

Also noted in the programme are Ian Wood (O Centrals) father of future AOE Captain Andy Wood, and Internationals Sam Doble, P Hale and John Finlan from Moseley and Jan Webster (Walsall)
