Men’s 1XV win at home

“Aston kicked off up the slope and soon retrieved the ball back from the kick off. The home team looked much sharper from the start than in recent weeks and Ian Lyons spread to ball early to the wingers. Chevel Taylor took and early pass and beat two men to score the opening try. A superb touchline conversion followed 7-0. Aston immediately put Stretton under pressure from the kick off with Ethan Channer making a number of hard yards up the field. Another try soon followed which was ably converted by Lyons 14-0. Unfortunately, old habits die hard and Aston allowed Stretton back into the game from a poorly handled kick off. Stretton gained plenty of momentum down the slope and Aston slipped off a number of tackles and a well-deserved try followed (14-7).

The next 10 minutes were largely stalemate as Stretton used the slope well and kicked to the corners. Ian Lyons put in a wonderful 60 metre clearance which put the home side into Stretton’s 22’. Aston won the Stretton lineout and were awarded a penalty for an infringement at the breakdown. Julius Hunt took the penalty quickly and offloaded to a rampaging Emric Elmhurst who scored under the posts 21-7. Aston messed up the resulting kick off and found themselves back under pressure before half time. Stretton used their backs well and created an overlap which was successfully completed for an easy try. A frustrating half for the home team as they failed to put together any cohesive periods of play.

The second half started much better with sharp offloads becoming a feature of Aston’s play. The introduction of Alex Higgins and Ray Brown paid off and Alex made a break in Stretton’s 22’. Kieran Burke fed the ball to Chevel Taylor who scored his second try of the afternoon. Another successful conversion and bonus point secured 28-14. The next 20 minutes produced 4 tries which were all a result of sharp offloads as the home team played some of their best rugby of the season. Stretton fought back well in the last 10 minutes to secure a bonus point and Aston’s defending for those 10 minutes was particularly poor. Nevertheless a good bonus point win for the home team which sets up a difficult home game against high flying Wednesbury next weekend. Man of the match was Adrian Buxton but a honourable mention goes to Ian Lyons who kicked superbly all afternoon.”
