Season ended on a high
After a brace from Tom Richardson the Millers defeated Mildenhall Town to climb above local rivals on the last game of the season.
After a couple of disappointing results, the Millers worked hard not to have the season fizzle out, and make sure we finish the game with a victory, and that's exactly what we did.
We started the game well and created a couple of chances. The glaring chance came for Alex Teniola, he was through on goal had his first shot saved, the rebound hit him and it looped over the crossbar. Next was Alex Stephenson who headed wide of the goal from a corner.
Five minutes after those chances, we took the lead. Tom Richardson picked the ball up around 25-yards out, no-one picked him up and he coolly curled it into the goal for Richardson's 8th goal in 12 games. Aveley 1-0 Mildenhall Town.
Only ten minutes later and we doubled our lead. Great work down the right-hand side from Dan Walker, he managed to keep the ball beat his man, pulled it back to Russell Malton who crossed into the back post for Tony Martin to nod in. Aveley 2-0 Mildenhall Town.
After our second, the visitors started to slowly ease their way back into the game and started to create goalscoring opportunities, although not really clear-cut.
However, on the 34th minute, the visitors found their way back into the game, Jake Chambers-Shaw was allowed a lot of time and space on the edge of the area, but you can't take anything away from the finish as Chambers-Shaw did well to blast it into the goal. Aveley 2-1 Mildenhall Town.
The rest of the first half was very stop and start, a clear offside was missed and after a few verbals, and potentially rightly so, Rhys Madden was given his sixth yellow card of the season.
Tom Richardson was through on goal, he was being held and pulled around everywhere but no free-kick was awarded which added to the Millers growing frustration. Two minutes after this, the Millers were finally awarded a free-kick after Tom Richardson was thrown to the floor, George Doyle stepped up but saw his free-kick smack the crossbar, coming back to Tony Martin on the edge of the area who couldn't keep the speculative and instinctive volley down as it went over the bar.
Half Time | Aveley 2-1 Mildenhall Town.
With that scoreline, the Millers really could've done with some breathing space, and with the first attack of the half, we scored our third, and Tom Richardson bagged his ninth since joining the Millers. Chris Bourne took aim from the edge of the area, it was palmed out by the Mildenhall keeper, Tom Richardson was the quickest to react and he simply tapped home. Aveley 3-1 Mildenhall Town.
The rest of the second half was a bit of an uneventful one as the season was coming to an end. AFC Sudbury scoring meant the Millers ended the season finishing above tenants Grays Atheltic.
Meanwhile, nice footwork against from Dan Walker set up Tony Martin for a shot but his effort was blocked by Tom Debenham. Ten minutes later a brilliantly timed tackle from Connor Witherspoon denied Mildenhall counter to our goal.
Mildenhall did have a couple of half chances on the counter-attack, but seemed to be reluctant to shoot at the goal.
Millers youth product Kieran Southgate came on with 20 plus minutes to go, and he showed his great potential with a stunning ball to Tom Richardson, it looked like he would complete his hat-trick but his touch around the keeper forced him wide, he then turned and chipped the Mildenhall keeper, but the finger-tip save denied the Millers a fourth.
