Millers defeat the Seasiders
A second-half comeback as the Millers secured a vital three points at home against Felixstowe & Walton United.
After what happened in the reverse fixture with the Millers dominating for a long period but still somehow losing the game 2-0 which included a penalty miss, it was clear to see that we wanted payback in a way, but to just secure three points.
It was an entertaining start to the game as the Millers dominated possession early on, the visitors looked set up for the counter attack but looked good going forward with Henry and Ainsley up there.
Just after 10 minutes and it was the Millers who took the lead, and who else but Tom Richardson? He got the ball down the right hand side of the pitch, drove into the box and somehow fired it past the Felixstowe & Walton United keeper. Aveley 1-0 Felixstowe & Walton United.
On 15 minutes a controversial moment happened as Tom Richardson spun his defender and went through on goal, Josh Kerridge took Tom down as he was through on goal, but on this occasion only a yellow card was given, when it could've been a red. Shad Ngandu stepped up to take the free-kick but his effort went an inch wide of the left hand post.
We then had two more big chances to put some breathing space between the two sides, but first Alex Akrofi was denied by a good save from Spurling, moments later after a great run from Andy Freeman, he crossed into the box but it just missed all of the Aveley players waiting to sweep it home.
The sucker punch came on the 22nd minute, a flowing passing move and a ball over the top of our back line came to Rhys Henry who finished well by finding the bottom corner of David Hughes goal from a narrow angle, there was suspicions of offside, but a clever finish leveled things up. Aveley 1-1 Felixstowe & Walton United.
Felixstowe grew in confidence and took the lead just before 30 minutes as a ball was played to the feet of Jack Ainsley who turned smartly and found the bottom corner to give the visitors a lead. Aveley 1-2 Felixstowe & Walton.
The feeling of "It's happening again" being behind to Felixstowe could've crept in, but the Millers heads didn't drop, Andy Freeman danced his way through the box had his standing leg swept away by Josh Kerridge, only for the referee to wave away appeals for a penalty.
Alex Akrofi then tested his luck again from close range, but again the visiting keeper matched it with a save down low to his left.
Half Time | Aveley 1-2 Felixstowe & Walton United.
Going into the final 45 minutes of this game, we needed a perfect start to the second half, and we got it. Tom Richardson was shoved in the back after getting in front of his man and the referee had no hesitation but to point to the spot. Shad Ngandu stepped up and slotted it away to get the Millers back on level terms. Aveley 2-2 Felixstowe & Walton United.
The second half was definitely a better one and more dominant than the first half, Tom Richardson's rasping effort was saved well by Spurling and somehow the follow up just ended up being scrambled away.
Tom Richardson was through on goal after a smart ball over the top of an incredibly high Felixstowe backline. Despite beating the offside trap, Spurling was there again to deny Tom.
The Millers were camped in the visitors final third with chance after chance, but again Felixstowe were frustrating us, corners were cleared, efforts blocked, Shad Ngandu trried his luck from outside the area but his effort was saved by Spurling.
But on the 75th minute, we had our breakthrough, a lovely through ball set Andy Freeman on goal and he calmly slotted the ball under the keeper to give us the lead. Aveley 3-2 Felixstowe & Walton.
Wyan Reid came on and made a impact and also probably should've got a penalty to maybe give us our fourth. Wyan Reid was in behind and the defender clearly shoved Reid to the ground, probably more of a penalty than the one that was given earlier in the half, but the ball eventually came to Tom Richardson who saw his effort beat the keeper but smash the side netting.
Four minutes were added time, as the visitors started to build pressure, and after a few heart in mouth moments where it looked like the visitors may have a chance to shoot our defence stood strong and held on for the three points.
