Avonmouth Hockey Club

A- for effort

by

With the warm sun on my back and Jo Harrison removing her tights it seemed spring may have arrived. Playing Redland, 3rd in the table, 4 places above Avonmouth, we were under no illusion how hard this game was going to be. We kept Redland out well at first with what looked like the start of a defence forming, Sophie Lennox and Billie Rewiri both punching above their weight and Elyse Wood looking good again as left back. Sammy Maule had a good game again earning her MOTM. There was good man marking most of the time which helped to keep the score down. Debbie Chappell was consistent in the middle of the park with Jo Harrison and Liz Tomkins linking up well on the left. Despite being advised not to play by her GP, returning Captain, Claire Hazell showed promise on the break but on a couple of occasions should of laid the ball off before taking on one too many players .
The game finished 4-0 to Redland, but make no mistake, if Avonmouth had played like this last week they would have won not drawn. I have learnt through life if you don’t change something, it won’t change itself. After watching Avonmouth for many years, they still possess the same flaws, lack of general fitness and the confidence to pass the ball, especially from their own 16s. They cannot rely on a big hit to get out of their own half as more often than not this just gives possession straight back to the opposition.
I can see marked improvement and it would be nice to see some players given their positions to keep. Claire leads from the front and the team are bonding well with a good mix of youth and experience. If they can keep working hard I can see next season being theirs for the taking.
