A Bristol-based rugby club has been busy forging links in the local community by establishing a partnership between it and the Somerset College of Arts and Technology.
The idea for the new relationship came about following a conversation between club member Ted Britton and Alison Stokes, who works at the college as an Entry Programme Leader for Foundation Learning.
Club chairman Steve Leyshon said: “We’ve undertaken a commitment to forge closer links with our community and when Ted mentioned the discussion he’d had with Alison about getting the students involved at the club, it was a great opportunity we simply had to say yes to.”
With the ever-increasing workload required to help maintain and run a rugby club, the idea that students from the college could further develop their life skills with projects at the club was one Alison was keen to support.
“The Entry course students at Somerset College were given this great opportunity to show their commitment as a team and it’s been invaluable for their coursework and their development for employment,” she said.
“The project demonstrated the hard work and commitment of these students, many of whom have additional needs.”
The students completely refurbished the club’s patio with hanging baskets, tubs and tables brightening the outside of the building, while the club’s function room is next to undergo a makeover in the next few weeks.
Vice-principal of Somerset College, Jo Burford, said: “Avonmouth Old Boys has provided the students with a wonderful opportunity to take on a real-life project which had to be delivered in a set time and to acceptable standards.
“This is a really positive collaboration between the students and the rugby club and is one we are keen to see continue.”
