The Player Interview returns with Chris Geal. The three time league winner talks about his time at BAA.

Who is Chris Geal in regards to BAA Heathrow (Sunday) Football Club?
Used to be Captain angry, but iv calmed down with age, so now i’m just skip!

How many seasons have you been with the club?

I joined in 2007, then missed the 2nd half of the 2008 season when my daughter was born, and have played ever since.

How did you come about joining BAA?
I joined through my brother Gary Beckey, he said the team needed a midfield general, but they couldn’t find 1, so i joined instead.

Do you have any game that sticks out in your mind for whatever reason?
Obviously, i have to mention last season’s cup final, my only 1, so it was a special occasion for me, but we lost & i played prob my worst game in a BAA shirt. I learnt a lot as i played the occasion not the game. Also the div 5 title decider against Old George, epic game.

As a player what has been your best performance in a game?

Has to be the last day of the season, title decider against Old George, mentioned above, unbelievable team performance, but really felt like i dominated that game from centre back, me and Gary C just seemed to repel everything. Great memories of that day.

During your time at the club have you won any trophies/medals?

BAA tournament, div 5 winners, div 2 winners, div 2 runners up, div 4 winners & league cup losers medal last year

During your time at the club, what have been your personal highlights?

Obviously the winners medals, div 5 was special as we won every game, but were pushed all the way by old george who only lost the 2 games to us, so was still squeaky bum til the last day.

At the moment BAA has 5 teams, so tell us. If you could take one player from each team who would they be?
To be honest i don’t really know many from the 1st &4ths anymore. Would take Dave Morris from the reserves, played with him for a few years, proper battler & very good on the ball, and Gary Chandler from the 5ths, because he’s my cuz & i always loved playing footy with him, great talker too.

You are currently playing for the 3rd team, you previously played for the first team, bit of a step down isn't it?
Not as young & fit as i used to be, but mainly coz i just wasn’t enjoying playing with the 1st team anymore. Luckily i had the option of playing for the 3rds.

What players have stuck out for you during your time at the club, good and bad?
Played with a lot of good players for baa over the years, Lloyd & Josh were very talented players, Ravenhill best goalie Ive played with, Lee Hunt is not the most talented but an absolute terminator. Always hated playing & training against Tommy Cornwall, could never get the ball off him!!
Bad….. kid called Jerome, wanted to fight more than play.

Which players have you seen improve the most at the club?
Back in the day was Dan Jones, improved massively in the few years i played with him, plus a smashing bloke. Have to mention Chris Williams recently, the difference between this season & last is night & day. he’s twice the player he was in my opinion.

Any players who haven’t lived up to expectations during your time with the club?
Luke Hurley…. Not that he isn’t a great little player, but when he joined us at 16, i thought he could be a world beater, but he loves a drink a other stuff too much & hasn’t had the commitment needed to be a top player. is playing very well this season tho & great to have him back.

Pick your all time starting eleven and up to 5 subs, state your reasons for selection.
GK Jason Ravenhill
CB Gary Chandler
CB Chris Geal
CB Mike Hamilton
LM Lloyd Vaughan
CM Dave Morris
CM Josh Neary
CM James Peake
RM Tom Cornwal
Number 10 role Ryan Mccullagh
ST Luke Hurley
Subs:- Gary Beckey, Jon Sydes, James Mc Cayna, lamps, matus, vish….. sorry if i’v forgotten any1

Has there been a team you always enjoyed playing against?

Has to be Old George, played them about 10 times over the years, always been great games. I remember the 1st time we played them in the 2011 league, i heard them saying b4 the game, “look at them, they are tiny, we will smash this lot”.... we were 6-0 up at half time… nuff said!!!!

How about any team you never looked forward to playing?

Never liked playing South Ealing Saints, dirty fuckers, i love a strong tackle, but they were rank.

What is the best or favourite ground you have played at?
The semi pro pitch at the Orchard in bedfont was a lovely pitch

…and the worst?
Stockley Park, or dog shit minefield as it’s more affectionately known!

What is the best goal you have scored?

Has to be in a 4-0 win over Load of Hay in 2010, will always remember it. Ball crossed in to me from a corner, 25 yards out. hit it 1st time on the volley, rifled in the top corner to make it 3-0 & kill the game. We beat them twice in the league that season but still lost the league to them.

What is the best goal you have seen in a game, for or against BAA.

Probably josh Nearys sideways bicycle kick from the edge of the area at the orchard against Shamrocks. Unbelievable tekkers!!

What is the best save you have seen in a game, for or against BAA?
Not 1 save, but 5, in 1 pen shoot out. outrageous goalkeeping…. if only i could remember the keepers name….

You have played under Alan Pollard, Gary Beckey and Jason Ravenhill. How do they differ?
Alan wasn’t a manager, he just collected the money, then kept it. Becks was a great manager, but sometimes put winning before morals, admittedly under pressure from me also, looking back, maybe it wasn’t right, but then maybe we wouldn’t of won the trophies we did… who knows. As for Ravenhill, you could write a book on his managerial style….. the Cloughie of Sunday league!!

You have played in three different leagues for the club, Hayes & District, Thames Valley and Middlesex County. Any preference out of them?
Not really had any preferences until recently, but as we know the tvsfl blatantly has it in for us, which can be shit…. but i loved winning the league last year & giving them the big fuck you. Would be awesome to do it again this year after being promoted 2 divisions

What is the best team you have played against, can you recall the game?

Remember playing against fc Bentons in the prem, they wore the brazil kit, i remember thinking, you gotta be a good team to wear that. They smashed us 7-0, we didn’t get a kick. Small team, but superb footballing team.

If you could change any thing about how the club is run what would you suggest?
I would stop the manager of the 3rd team making his team wear 30yr old kits as punishment for acting like children!! Seriously though, think you do an amazing job, your commitment is second to none.

Tell us about the following comment 'I feel like I lost a friend and gained a manager'.

I’v known & played alongside Jason Ravenhill for years, when i started playing for him, he kept digging me out, most of which i thought were uncalled for, wasn’t sure why. I felt like a had lost a friend & gained a manager, so i told him straight.

You are the last club captain of a BAA team that played in a Premier Division, what can you recall of that season?

Proud to play in the prem, but i don’t have great memories of that season as we didn’t do ourselves justice… our “match winners” just didn’t have the heart for it.

Before the season started you won the BAA tournament and were coming off the back of two league title wins, you must have been confident going into it?

That was probably our biggest downfall, we got too big for our boots.

What surprised you the most about playing in the Premier Division?

Probably the gap between the top 4 & the bottom 4 teams,( there was only 8 teams in the division at the time) the top 4 finished about 15 points ahead of the bottom 4 & were in a league of their own.

You was part of the team that set a new club record this season for most competitive wins in a row, 19! Tell us about that run.
Great times… i don’t think we had very high expectations for the season, so it kinda came out of nowhere, snowball effect really, great team spirit won us games & we just kept going & going.

Despite your league title success, you have reached one cup final, tell us about that game and your memories.
Like i said before, proud as it was my only cup final to date & to be honest i thought my time had gone, but thanks to you, i finally reached 1. just gutted at the outcome, & my performance personally, played the occasion & not the game.

With the league success you have had, why do you think cup success has been hard to come by?
I have no idea really, as we have won must win pressure games to win the league, so i’l put it down to bad luck!!

Apart from your final you reached two semi finals. You lost 1-0 to Iver Heath in the Mary Wells Cup and 5-0 to Ruislip Rovers in the County Cup. Unlucky? Or not good enough?
Iver Heath we were definitely unlucky, we absolutely dominated that game & their “rather large” keeper saved everything. Ruislip we were outworked & outclassed, i believe that was the game that ended our 19 consecutive wins…. again, we got too big for our boots & got schooled.

League title winning teams, 2011, 2012 and 2017...........rank the teams in order of best first.
Difficult 1 really, 2011 & 2012 were pretty much the same team, both were great achievements as we were a very young team put together by becks. 2017 was a more experienced team with some very gd players, put together by very hard work & recruitment from yourself. So both good for different reasons.

Lets go back a little further, the 2009-10 season. You won your first ten league games only to finish 3rd (to Load of Hay and Manor). What are your memories of that season?
Good & bad really, we beat Load of Hay twice, beat & drew with manor, so we proved ourselves to be the best team, but let ourselves down against the lower teams & got punished massively.

Lets talk about changing teams. After the 2012-13 season you was set to join Bradley's team until Gary took over the first team from Keith Hill. How was that for you?
Just wanted to keep playing for baa, so when the prem team folded, i was gonna join brad’s team til becks took over the 1st team, so i joined them instead…. thank god!!!

You then made the move at the beginning of the 2014-15 season to leave the first team and join the 3rd team (known as the Vets that year), tell us about the reasons behind that.
Like i said before, i didn’t enjoy the 2nd season of playing for the 1st team, too many prima donnas that didn’t give a shit about the club, so wanted to get back to playing with mates and stalwarts of the club. The drop in standard wasn’t important to me anymore as i just wanted to enjoy playing.

So you played for the first team in 2013-14 in Division 2 of the TVSFL. You finished runners up in controversial circumstances when Maidenhead Revolution refused to fulfill the last fixture against you, meaning they won the league title on goal difference. Tell us about that season and that decision from Revolution.
What can you say really, they bottled it & basically cheated their way to the title. the most frustrating thing about that season was we should of been home & dry 6 or 7 games from the end, but players commitment let us down & we ended up giving them the chance to bottle it & cheat!!

Lets talk about your other league title decider game, 2011 it was a winner takes all game against Old George Inn(later Airport Motors). What are your memories of that game when whoever won would win the league title.
Epic game, my favourite individual victory i have played in. Unbelievable team performance, & one of my best performances in the mighty baa shirt, will always remember holding the man of the match champagne in 1 hand & the league trophy in the other. Happy days

I asked earlier which of the three league teams was the best, now.....league title 2011, 2012, 2017. Which one means the most?
Sounds silly, but if we had won the cup final last season, i would of said last year’s league title, as it would of meant winning the double in a season when we wern’t really expecting to win anything, & i thought my time had passed. But we didn’t, So, i will have to say the 2011 title, it was my 1st league title, we lost all 4 pre season games & had zero expectations going into the campaign, so, to go on & win every game that season was a great achievement. Up the baa!!!!!!!!!!!
