Following the bitter disappointment of the previous week’s brief outing at the NLD finals in Newark the U10’s returned to winning ways in a triple header at the Bakewell Showground against the visiting teams of Ashbourne, Tupton & Belper.
The day started well with the arrival of a comparative ‘Wealth of Resource’ in the form of eleven Bakewell players consisting Will Adlington
, Harrison Butterworth
, Ryan Dakin
, Barnaby De la Billiere, Eddie Finnay, Joe Fitzsimons
, Ludo Litchfield, Tom Mayhew
, Hamish O’Rourke, Dan Stevenson
& Max Webber who readied for their first test against a much improved Ashbourne unit.
Bakewell seized the initiative from the start; the over utilised crash pass from the previous week’s NLD’s caught Ashbourne napping; Ludo Litchfield this time making vital forward yards. Sadly like the previous week possession was again soon conceded but customary Bakewell defence forced the turnover, Hamish O’Rorke pouncing to open Bakewell’s account. The Bakewell lads were unlucky not to add to their total in the first period as they continued to assert their dominance in attack, the rampaging Litchfield a constant menace, as well as defence with thumping tackles snuffing out any Ashbourne forays into Bakewell territory.
After the break more solid Bakewell defence drove Ashbourne back who turned over the ball allowing Litchfield to score his first of the day and Bakewell’s second. Any thoughts Ashbourne may have harboured of a comeback were extinguished in a single moment; the psychological impact of Ryan Dakin
’s ‘Tackle of the Day’ can only be imagined but Ashbourne’s defence subsequently remained rooted when Harrison Butterworth
deftly picked up from the line-out and ran unopposed for a Bakewell third sealing a comfortable win for the home side.
