A great team performance from a solid squad
One of the boys complained the other week that I hadn't written an match reports – so I thought I had better do something after yesterday. However – any parents wanting to take up that role, please feel free!
Rugby is punishing game, and a good side like Melbourne can always make you play and look worse than you are, and that is exactly what happened, and we were roundly beaten. However the boys came back with a confident win against Ilkeston. Then came Derby, a close game narrowly lost, but with signs being shown by the boys of how to deal with such a side. A captain's performance from Toby (Mad Eye Moody) Dawson limiting the damage significantly.
Then came Glossop – a great match to watch and to play in, hopefully. More flowing rugby and (I think) a first club try from Kieran (Chabal) Johal. That left us 3rd in the group, a place in the Shield competition and a 3rd place play off against our local rivals Matlock.
Resting 2 players allowed everyone to shine. George (Cueto) Whawell immediately stepping up to stop the knarly Matlock scrum half getting the better of us. Another try from Kieran, then a brace from Alisdair (Ashton) Thompson, which could have been 3 had not Archie (Weepu) Wright driven on to the line to add to his own tally. A good win with some flowing rugby (we'll have to play more tag!) - wingers with the ball! (Who would have thought it!).
The day demonstrated great depth in the team, and mentioning some players is perhaps unfair because everyone performed. However there were some great performances by players who have not always demonstrated their potential; in particular Chris (Robinson) Maltby, George (Tuilagi) Adlington and Jack (Wrigglesworth) Rocca showing prowess in defence and attack, with even James (Banahan) Marsden accused of being too rough against Matlock! Joe (Hartley) Doherty put in an amazingly solid performance all day, getting on with every job and was a well deserved man of the match.
A team playing in the true spirit of Rugby – Discipline, Sportsmanship,Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment.
