Portadown started the quicker of the two teams at a rain lashed Lamont Park and created a couple of early unconverted half chances.
It was Ballymena who opened the scoring though, after six minutes winger Marc Faulkner did well to keep the ball in play down the right, then skipped to the bye line and pulled the ball back for striker Sonny Redford to slot the ball into the Portadown goal.
A closely fought first half ensued with Portadowns big pacy forwards a danger from the long ball. Ballymena had their own chances and were denied only by a couple of close offside decisions.
Portadown drew level five minutes into the second half but Ballymena regained the lead soon after, Redford bagging his second with a good run and finish from a tight angle after being played in by Abi Sweetlove.
Ballymena were pressing for a third but Portadown were always dangerous on the counter attack. Indeed it was from a Ballymena corner that they broke to equalise midway through the half. Both teams continued to threaten, the long kicking of the Portadown goalkeeper on the tight Lamont Park pitch forcing the Ballymena defence to sit deeper as the game went on. It was Portadown who broke the deadlock five minutes from time when the ball was bundled over the line from a corner. Ballymena pressed hard for an equaliser right to the end though ultimately without success.
A disappointing result for the u13s in a game that they will feel they deserved at least a draw from... Credit to both teams for producing an exciting contest in monsoon like conditions!
Mom- Callum Hendron and Sonny Redford.
