Preston North End legend Sir Tom will be officially honoured at a special ceremony on the day of the traditional Preston North End friendly in July, although a date for that game is yet to be confirmed.

Club secretary George Halliwell said: “We have changed our stadium name as a tribute to Sir Tom.

“I can’t believe nobody else has done this, but he was a real favourite down at the club and attended a great number of functions.

“Everyone is pleased to see the stadium named after Sir Tom and it’s a real privilege,

“Who knows? It could lead to bigger things after this.”

The club will also be contributing to a number of Sir Tom’s charities, including the Sir Tom Finney Soccer Development Centre.

The centre is a registered children’s charity and is FA Charter Standard accredited.

Halliwell added: “We are going to hold bucket collections throughout the season to help raise money.

“Another thing we will do is donate plenty of junior kits.

“I have spoken with managers at the junior teams and they are all more than happy to do this.”

And there was more good news for Brig off the pitch as star forward Ally Waddecar was selected for the Evo-Stik League Division One North team of the year.

On Saturday, Brig were held to a 1-1 draw against Northwich Victoria, and boss Neil Crowe felt it was a vital point in their hunt for a play-off place.

He said: “I think we had settled for a point towards the end.

“They were hard to break down and were a solid side, we didn’t lose that’s the main thing.

“If people had said you would take four points from the Lancaster and Northwich games then I’d have happily taken that return.”

Brig currently sit fifth in the Evo-Stik League Division One North and have one game in hand on sixth-placed Lancaster and two games in hand on fourth-placed Ramsbottom Untied.

Tonight, Tuesday, Brig take on Prescot Cables, and as this is one of Brig’s games in hand, Crowe feels the game is a must-win.

He said: “We do need to take each game as it comes but tomorrow is probably one we really have to pick up a victory in.

“It’s time for us to be stood up and counted for, we need to put that bit of pressure on ourselves.

“We will be able to welcome back Matt Lawlor and Phil Doughty into the squad and they are big additions.

“Fingers crossed our squad stays fully fit for the remaining fixtures, . All we need to do is concentrate on what we do – it’s in our own hands.”
