Bamber Bridge 1-1 Bolton Wanderers XI
Match Report by Alex Urquhart-Cannon
Brig striker Sefton Gonzales’ opener was cancelled out by a team consisting of players from Bolton’s U18s and their development squad, before both teams hit the crossbar late into the second half.
Neil Crowe’s side opened the scoring in the 20th minute after some rapid passing play through the midfield. The quick interplay created space for Alistair Waddecar out wide, the winger curled an inviting ball in which was met by Gonzales at the near post who nodded in the first goal of the game.
The frontman’s goal filled the home side with confidence as they expertly prevented constant waves of attacking play from Bolton.
The second period saw the Wanderers eventually break through the Brig rearguard to level the score.
A fierce strike by Joe McKee ricocheted off Brig defender Lee Green and into the path of Jack Sampson, the striker slotting the ball into the corner with his first touch to make it 1-1.
Brig were unlucky not to take the lead for a second time in the match in the 70th minute. A long ball played from deep found Gonzales, the striker flicking the ball onto Michael Clark. Clark quickly turned and volleyed the ball, the shot soared over goalkeeper John Courtney and crashed against the crossbar.
With only a couple of minutes remaining Bolton nearly snatched the victory after a stunning shot from substitute Tom Youngs. Jack Sampson drifted inside from the left flank and laid the ball across for Youngs who rifled a shot flying past Lee Dovey and against the crossbar, much to the relief of the home side.
Youngs’ shot was the last opportunity of the match before referee Neil Swarbrick blew his whistle to end yet another impressive pre-season performance by Bamber Bridge.
