U11s at the Premiership Final

The U11s wonderful season was capped off with a trip to Twickenham as guests of Land Rover.

The U11 squad's exploits in the Premiership Land Rover Cup were rewarded with a day out at rugby HQ as they had pre-match photos on the pitch and then took part in a half time parade in front of 80,000 rugby fans.

A coachload of players and parents made the trip down on a sweltering May morning. After signing in with the other U11 and U12 Land Rover Cup winners from around the country, the squad then went out on to the pitch for photos. We then had an hour to kill before the four other Banbury buses arrived with further club members and most importantly, the fantastic picnic lunch prepared by Jo Higgs. The players took the opportunity to run amok in the Aviva Fans Village while parents took advantage of the liquid refeshments on offer at the inevitably eye-watering prices.

After the non-appearance of our lunch (a long story), we all grabbed some emergency rations before making our way into the stadium for the eagerly anticipated season finale between Tigers and Quins. A cracking first half saw Quins go in ahead playing the sort of rugby every Mini rugby team should be trying to emulate. Our squad met in the bowels of the stadium at the interval with the other Minis teams and were then ushered into the arena for their much anticipated circuit. It was a great experience with the stands looking even vaster from that vantage point and the heat pitch side had to be felt to be believed.

Harlequins later saw out the game and were deservedly crowned Premiership champions. The Banbury contingent forsook the presentation to get back to the coaches and tuck into the much awaited picnic. Despite the ensuing slow crawl out of London this was a great day out and a real incentive for the players to see if they can get back here again next year in their last season of Minis rugby.
