You are probably aware of the recent media coverage surrounding allegations of historical child abuse in football. There have also been statements from the RFU regarding child welfare issues in rugby. In light of this, I would like to remind you of the measures which Banbury RUFC undertake as a Club to protect children.

The Club has a Child Welfare Policy and fully subscribes to the RFU Safeguarding Policy, which you can find at: www.englandrugby.com/governance/safeguarding/. These policies are guided by advice from the NSPCC.

Banbury RUFC also has an appointed Club Welfare Officer (CWO) who is Rebecca Warner. If parents have any child protection issues or concerns, they are advised to take them directly to the Club Welfare Officer rather than their child’s coach. Additionally, all Club Coaches, and Club Officials handling personal details, undergo checks by the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS), who operate and manage a criminal record checking process for those working with children or vulnerable adults.

The RFU provides safeguarding training for Club Coaches by means of two levels of courses. The next course will take place in January. Elements of child protection are included in all coaching courses.

The Club has recently renewed its status as an RFU Accredited Club. This process ensures that the Club is compliant with the RFU’s safeguarding guidelines and good practice in many areas.

With all these measures taken together, we believe that the Club is taking all reasonable steps to protect children and to safeguard their welfare. If you have any concerns or questions in this regard, please feel free to contact either Rebecca Warner or me.
