U14s top group in county cup
Best defensive record in the competition helps secure home tie for cup semi final
Such was our group that we could have finished anywhere from third to first. An away trip to another potential table topper meant the job wasn't going to be easy for Banbury.
Wallingford have improved as the competition has progressed and we were quickly to see why. Much of the first 15 minutes was spent in our half defending (and defending and defending) proving why we have conceded 12 points less than anyone else in the competition. Whatever Wallingford tried to do we managed to pull off a last minute defensive move and put the ball back upfield.
Whilst we were digging in there was an opportunity to break out and the first of our three scores was put down near the corner flag. That was pretty much the highlight of the first half although our forwards got a considerable amount of scrum practice.
The second half was much the same as the first and this slow game suited us more than our opponents. One more than one occasion they won the scrum but there was then a reset and we went back to square one.
Banbury are pretty good at scrums so were able to make Wallingford pay by gaining possession and then hitting them on the break. Two more (one converted by an excellent kick from near the line) put this to bed but Wallingford deserved much more from their effort than they got.
We now face Witney in a home cup game the week after next (so our coincidentally arranged friendly with them next weekend has been cancelled).
