Arthur Houghton

Everyone at Banbury United Football Club was deeply saddened to be informed that Arthur Houghton, who played for Banbury Spencer for a number of seasons after the end of the Second World War, passed away last Friday afternoon.

Arthur Houghton (often referred to as Archie or Arky) was a local lad who made his debut for Banbury Spencer’s first team on Saturday 15th September 1945, playing on the right wing in a Birmingham Combination game away to Hednesford.

He would serve Spencer well for many seasons, both in the first and reserve teams, his last first team appearance coming on Tuesday 28th April 1953 in a Birmingham Combination home game against Rugby Town, again, as on his debut, playing on the right wing.

Arthur’s brothers Charlie and Joe would also make first team appearances for Banbury Spencer.

Arthur has kept in touch with the club over the last 60 years and in recent years has been down to the Spencer Stadium on a number of occasions for various nostalgia evenings. Arthur’s knowledge and memories of the early days of Banbury Spencer enthralled many.

The club would like to send condolences to Arthur’s family at this difficult time.
