United win on the night but it is not enough and Buckingham Athletic go through to Final on aggregate

A 41st minute goal from leading goalscorer Leam Howards, his 21st of the season, was not enough to see United through to the Buckingham Charity Cup final as Buckingham Athletic had won the first leg 2-0 four weeks ago.

United were indebted to goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell from going further behind on aggregate in the 29th minute when Phil Morris picked up the ball just inside the Banbury half and then going on to ride three or four tackles from defenders before striking the ball from the edge of the area only to be denied a goal by a finger-tip save from the custodian.

United would though take the lead four minutes before the interval when Isaac fed the ball through to Leam Howards who through on goal slotted the ball home past Andy Hammond in the Athletic goal from six yards into the corner of the net.

Anyone expecting this goal to lead to the proverbial floodgates opening in the second half were to be very wrong. Though United had the better of the second period, clear chances were at a premium as Athletic defended well against a lack-lustre home side.

Having said that Banbury should have scored a second goal in the 63rd minute when a Marvin Martin quickly taken free-kick set Isaac away down the right who then crossed the ball into the centre where it bounced up for Howards but he somehow managed to head the ball over from right under the crossbar

United had two games in which to get the better of a team playing three levels below in the non-league football pyramid and having failed to do so one has to say over the two legs it was a deserved aggregate win for the South Midlands Division One side.

Buckingham Athletic will play Olney Town in the final at Buckingham Athletic's Stratford Fields ground on Holiday Monday 4th May 3.00pm. Olney showed United how to comeback from a first leg deficit, and in some style, for despite losing 2-1 to Buckingham Town at home they went and won 6-1 in the second leg at Town's ground on Tuesday!
