United through to County Cup final after extra-time win over holders Ardley United

The first decent chance of the game would fall Banbury's way in the 16th minute when a low cross from the left hand side by Darius Browne created an excellent opportunity for Hicham Abdellah eight yards out but he skewed his shot wide.

This though began a good spell for Banbury. On 19 minutes Luke Cray got on to the end of a left wing cross from Martin Martin but his header from eight yards was well tipped over the bar by Jack Harding.

Banbury got the breakthrough that they had been threatening in the 25th minute when a free-kick from the left taken by Abdellah saw the ball fall to Luke Cray at the near post close to the bye-line who then struck the ball across the six yard box where Leam Howards knocked the ball home from close range.

Ardley were much improved in the last twenty minutes of the first half with Ricky Johnson, who had started at centre-half, being pushed up front and causing some problems for the Banbury defence but the score remained 1-0 at the interval.

Banbury had the better of the opening to the second half and had another particularly good spell around the hour mark. On 58 minutes Darius Browne shot from the edge of the penalty area but Harding saved comfortably. Three minutes later Kynan Isaac took the ball inside from the right before shooting just over the bar. On 66 minutes a Browne low cross from the left fell to Jacob Daffern but the Milton Keynes loanee poked his shot wide from ten yards.

With Banbury having failed to take chances and having just the one goal lead it always looked as though Ardley might find a way back into the game and as the half developed further that always looked more likely. On 77 minutes they went close when only the cross bar denied Johnson before just three minutes later Leigh Bedwell was penalised for a push on Johnson who then converted the spot-kick himself to tie it up at 1-1.

However, with just five minutes to go Banbury were back in front when a left hand side corner taken by Abdellah saw Tom Ryan power an unstoppable header past Harding from five yards out.

Ryan's goal looked as though it was enough to see Banbury through but in the first minute of stoppage time an Ardley corner from the right saw a Johnson header come back off the crossbar to Andrew Prescott who hammered the ball home from eight yards, thus taking the tie to extra-time.

Just two minutes into the first period of extra time, a long ball down the centre was latched onto by Conor Ingram who slotted the ball home to put Ardley ahead for the first time in the game.

Banbury were not about to lie down though and in the 99th minute Ollie Stanbridge brought down Kynan Isaac inside the Ardley penalty area. Jacob Walcott converted his eighth penalty of the season to make it 3-3.

Just a minute before the interval in extra time and Banbury were ahead 4-3 when a left hand side corner taken by Abdellah was put into the six yard box where Nathaniel Lewars headed the ball home.

With no further goals in the second period of extra time, it was Banbury who thus earned a place in the Senior Cup final at the Kassam Stadium where they will play the winners of the Oxford United and North Leigh semi-final which takes place next week.
