HOLBROOK SPORTS 2 BARDON HILL FC 1
Bardon started this game on the front foot and could have scored three times in the first ten minutes. First on three minutes good work by Fray down Bardon’s right allowed an opportunity for Mulonga who’s shot was deflected just wide of the post. Then a good run by Ramsey ended with a cross come shot which flew across the Holbrook goal with two Bardon players just failing to get on the end of the final ball.
Then on eight minutes a terrific cross from Partner was missed at the front post by Ramsey.
Holbrook created their first chance of the game after 20 minutes when from a free kick Campbell was left completely unmarked but failed to direct his header on target when it appeared easier to score. The miss did not prove to be expensive when only 3 minutes later Holbrook took the lead. A hopeful high ball into Bardon’s box was not dealt with by the Bardon rear guard and after good work by Fisher, King was on hand to roll the ball over the line.
Bardon replied with a drive by Blythe from 20 yards which was cleared off the line by Whitehead. Bardon still had the greater of the possession but never really threatened the Holbrook keeper and it was Holbrook who had the chance to extend their lead when Fisher went close twice just before half time.
The second half began with Bardon again on the front foot and dominating possession and it came as no surprise when they finally had a golden chance to draw level. A jinxing run by Williams ended with Ruston hauling him down in the penalty area and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Unfortunately for Bardon, Hart Harper fired the resultant spot kick over the bar. Bardon continued to press and substitute Sheldon skilfully set up Shultz who fired just wide. Bardon were made to pay for their wastefulness when a poor clearance was pounced upon by Ruston who fed Fisher who shot home.
Bardon did pull a goal back with fifteen minutes to go when a good through ball by Blythe found Partner who fired past Lillie in the Holbrook goal. Bardon continued to press and a Shultz header landed on top of the cross bar but in truth for all their dominance and possession of the ball, they never really threatened to equalise.
Bardon need to learn very quickly how to win ugly.
