The final festival of the season our U7’s were as ready as could be. It was to be at Upper Clapton where we were expected to face Enfield A and Enfield B, Wanstead, Chingford and Upper Clapton. Sadly Chingford was a no show so it meant amalgamating teams into one group. The winner of the group would win the cup with second place winning the vase. We had a team who were totally committed to the challenge ahead.
Our first match saw us play against Wanstead. We do not have a good track record against them so our team had to dig team. Our U7’s played as a team with lots of good support generating excellent tries. There were as ever great individual tries spanning the full length of the field from both sides. We also saw some excellent tagging. The final score was a hard earned 7-7. Both teams left the pitch feeling that they had played a good game of rugby that day!
Our next opponents were Enfield A. We knew without a doubt that the match was not going to be easy. Again our U7’s pulled out all the stops. Great support work with very few errors saw once again some great tries. We also saw again great individual tries which proved to be crucial in the deciding seconds. Barking U7’s were proud to hold Enfield A to a draw, final score 7-7.
We then faced Enfield B. There was no stopping our U7’s. Great tagging on our part saw errors from Enfield B creep into the game resulting in tries from turn over ball. It goes without saying that great support work saw more tries. Once again we saw some great individual tries. It was a resounding victory in the end. The final score BRFU 5, Enfield B 0.
Our final game was to be against Upper Clapton. We knew we were yet again about to face formidable opponents. They had already won all their matches! Undaunted our U7’s gave it their best shot. We certainly did not make it easy for them. Upper Clapton frequently got themselves into off-side positions which we were able to capitalise on. Great team work saw tries from both sides. Sadly it wasn’t enough to prevent them from winning the match. Upper Clapton were the final overall winners, final score 6-4.
So Upper Clapton were the final overall champions at the festival.
I am proud to announce that BRFU U7’s came second. We came away with the Vase. Although not overall winners our team did us proud!
BRFU U7’s have amassed a good track record in the festivals this season, joint winners with Rochford at the Southend Festival, runners up at the Upminster festival and again runners up at the Upper Clapton Festival! Well credit where it’s due it has in part been due to having an excellent coach. A huge thank you to Richard Pruce. But I must also thank the parents for their continued committment and support without which we most certainly would not have a team!
