Chairman On Pulling Together To Back Alex

1 month ago By Adam Dennehey

Barkingside chairman Jimmy Flanaghan has commented on recent events at the club, voicing his support for New manager Alex Goldstone.

The following was going to be included in his 'Secretary's Scribblings' section this Friday but our game against Redbridge, which was due to be played that night has now been rearranged for Monday 28th January. Kick-off for that match is at 7:45pm.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi one and all welcome to our Friday night fixture against our friends Redbridge, a very warm welcome to everyone connected with the Motormen.

It's really wierd for the first time in my 10 years as your Chairman. I'm struggling to know what to write in these notes and that is probably because I see both sides of how people are looking at our club at the moment.

In that I mean that following from the outside looking in, we look in a dreadful state - no wins, barely any goals, a leaky defence. I can imagine that there are lots of people involved in football who are probably looking at that and thinking:'well they have gone its just a case of who joins them.'

Then the view I'm looking at is we are only three games into a new arrangement. In two of those three games we could and probably should have got something out of those games. Again without bleating on it's fine lines and or not taking our scoring opportunities.

That's the part that I'm struggling to absorb in my head at the moment. I seriously believe the option we have been handed by a superb act of friendship is our best option. If that turns out not to be the case then I will hold my hands up and say i got it wrong. God knows I question myself enough as it is.

Once again I have had a couple of people offer to rescue my club since the Ilford game, it's quite funny really they make it all sound so easy. But again I think those offering are doing it for their own agenda and not with the clubs best interests at heart. Like I said in my notes for the Ilford game it's how you view things i suppose, ie - Half Full or Half Empty.

It's interesting there are loads of clubs with similar problems to us at moment, Crystal Palace, Newcastle, and Burnely being some that spring to mind when you listen to the experts on Match of the Day.

If there has been damage done, it was probably done in late September to late October when we played about 6 games in a 3 week period. There was a lot of stirring and unsettling done amongst some of the players who we had at the club at the time, that's certainly when all the social media stuff started as well. Perhaps with hindsight I should have tried to stamp certain things out, or taken on board others opinions at that time more seriously but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Anyway we are where we are like it or not. We will only get it improved by pulling together and through positive thinking something i know everyone connected at the club on and off pitch are quite capable of doing. Indeed Roger Chilvers and I joked the other day about him, me, John Belsey and Len Llewellyn signing up as like a 'Dad's Army' type homeguard but we coul3dnt work out who would be Pike and who would be running round saying: 'Don't panic Mr Mainwaring.'

Let's all get behind Alex. Our seasons starts now and there is still a tremendous amount of football with plenty of twists and turns ahead of us. That's why we love and at times hate football.

Many many thanks to all who have attended our games recently. Your support is always appreciated.
