First half strikes from Murfet and Suthers not enough to beat Gwalchmai

3 - 2 was the half time score and that was how it finished in spite of a resurgent performance in the second half. The equaliser just wouldn't come.

We were lucky that the deputy assistant physio for Barmouth , one Tom Hughes, wasn’t needed throughout the entire game as he said that although he can kneel down OK, getting up again is sometimes more of an issue. This lack of employment for Tom was a reflection of how both sides played a sporting game on a bright sunny afternoon on Anglesey. The average age of the dug-out set a new league record and this was because we were only able to travel with 11 players yesterday.
The team played excellent touch football but were undone during a period of 20 minutes during the first half when Gwalchmai scored 3 times and looked like they wanted victory more and bore down on every Barmouth player in possession. Barmouth had gone one up after 16 minutes with a thumping free-kick from Rob Murfet 5 yards outside the box into the top right corner.
Gwalchmai came back straight away through Mark Griffiths to make it 1-1 a minute later even though Daren Andrews in the Barmouth goal got a hand to it and almost pushed it wide. Gwalchmai’s Gareth Jones made it 2-1 in the 27th minute with a header and this was followed 9 minutes later with the second goal of the afternoon direct from a free-kick; this time to Mark Evans.
Tactical changes by Llyr Hughes then allowed Stuart Rogers freedom to run down the right and cross to George Sutherns to make it 3-2 a few minutes before half time.
Barmouth exploited their runners up front better in the second half and won two corners in the first five minutes although Gwalchmai’s strength and height in defence snuffed out the Barmouth threat. Barmouth fared better with through balls to feet through the centre where the threat of the pace of George Sutherns and Dave Edwards gave several tough chances.
Gwalchmai also had their chances in the second half but failed with their final touch. George Sutherns and James Papirnyk had good chances to share the spoils but unluckily for Barmouth that equaliser wasn’t to come.
Well done to the 11 who put up a great fight on the day.
