What a difference in conditions at Nefyn’s Cae'r Delyn ground compared to our last visit. The pitch was bathed in glorious sunshine and for the first 10 minutes or so you wouldn’t have believed that Barmouth arrived 10 mins after scheduled kick off time and didn’t get the chance to prepare for the game; still such are early kick-off games with the lads finishing work and getting straight in their cars.
There was nothing worrying about the precisely struck back pass after 10 mins from Dan Griffith, except that it wasn’t on the ground and it saw keeper Stuart Pilling kick-out at fresh air, 1-0 to Nefyn and an own-goal.
10 minutes later and a neatly worked move across the Barmouth box saw Nefyn’s Llyr Evans give Pilling no chance for 2 -0.
Barmouth began to settle again and Shane Jones began to create pressure up front forcing a corner from a free-kick. From another corner, Dan Griffith rose to head just over. Another free kick and confusion in the Nefyn penalty area resulted in a rightly disallowed Barmouth effort – offside; all this in a 5 minute spell . A minute later and Harri Davies is one-on-one with the keeper and all the pressure is on the Nefyn goal.
Ryan Jones was chasing everything down the right and put in a great cross but only the keeper was there to collect the ball.
At the back, Joe Soar dominated every long ball chance created by Nefyn and “Joe’s ball” became the most frequent sound heard apart from the lambs bleating in the field behind the stand.
The half ended with one final Barmouth effort as Dan Griffith headed over from another corner.
The game was nearly beyond Barmouth in the first couple of minutes of the second half but Dan Griffith somehow managed to get back to the goal line and hook the ball clear; no goal-line technology in operation here!
Somewhat against the tide at the start of the second half, Abduraheem Ruston went on one of those mazy runs more associated with George Best as he moved in from the right running round 3 defenders before slotting home with his left foot for 2 – 1 on 60 minutes.
Unfathomably, Barmouth keeper Pilling began to lose his footing; we will blame this on a light dew at the changing room end of the pitch; he slipped when trying to clear from the edge of his box only for the Nefyn no 8, Evan Evans to put the ball wide from 20 yards with an empty goal staring at him.
Another slip at it was 3 -1 after 70 mins and then a headed back pass that Stuart could only parry into the top corner of the net made it 4 – 1 two minutes later and the game was over as a contest.
The best goal of the game came in the 83rd minute when Nefyn’s Brian Mathews chipped the Barmouth keeper when running away from goal towards the goal line for 5 – 1. There was another goal to come scored by Nefyn sub Michael Hughes but I didn’t see it because it was too dark by then.
A tough outing for the lads but on another day, the score would probably have been 1 – 0.
