Sussex Plate Semi-Final
Barns Green 13 Shoreham 34
This game was genuinely in the balance until the last fifteen minutes. Barns Green hovering only one score behind, saw the game go the way of Shoreham as effort and heart were overcome by possession and the ability to finish off chances.
Green had performed most credibly against this well organised Sussex Intermediate side and were rewarded in the first half when strong work from Mike Mann and Olli Mason saw Danny Conway carry to the line, which Dave Barter, who was on form with the boot all afternoon convert.
Rory Yeates created space and line breaks, for the ball just not quite to go to hand, Olly Brown worked hard on the wing, and Pete Salkeld was ever present in both attack and defence. The loss of Skipper Guy Viney to an arm injury in the middle of the first half was a significant blow for Green-but manfully through the efforts of the forwards and notably Kieran Harris, Green kept themselves very much in this game.
Finally, and the precursor to two more scores to finish the game off, a long drop out was caught by a fleet and determined Shoreham forward, who ran directly to score with Green striving hard but being found wanting in defensive alignment.
Green can now look forward to the last third of the League season, safe in the knowledge that this was a game where they competed positively and strongly against a capable side in the top half of the league above.
